Pediatrics in Mexico and New York

My project

My name is Emily Lopez. For my March Madness project I did a comparative analysis of Pediatric Care in New York and Mexico. I first thought of this idea because I was sick this summer and spent ample time at the Health Center at my sleep-away camp. There, I became close with the nurse and I became fascinated with her life and background and she would tell me stories from her past. One of the most interesting things she told was that the FDA had not approved certain medicines in the United States which were being used in Mexico where she is from. Gabby, the nurse taught me how to do CPR on children and told me about her job back in Mexico. In Mexico City, she runs her own Pediatric Practice and assists with Sleep Coaching and parenting. For my project, I flew to Mexico on December 18th to shadow Gabby at her own practice and visited one of the main pediatric hospitals. I received a tour of the Pediatric Care units. For two days, I shadowed different residents as they did rounds and got to know some of the children. I am focusing my topic on the socioeconomic status of clients, challenges faced in running her own practice, common ailments, income of neighborhood, costs of visits and insurance, who are their suppliers of materials and what is the cost of those materials and much more. Along with this, I am studying the health care systems in both Mexico and New York.
