The first step of my process was taking an original picture to base the three pieces on. I wanted to do something interesting, maybe a portrait, but when I talked to the photography expert, Serge Levy, he suggested that I do something simple. Since my project is judging the art mediums and not the subject of the piece, nothing should distract from the mediums themselves. The goal is to make the piece objective. So, I decided to choose a glass of water as my subject.
Once I chose the subject, I took many pictures from different angles until deciding on one. I then cut out a square in a piece of paper to experiment with cropping the image and setting up the composition of the subject.
Once I was happy with the image, I made a sketch the size of my 28x28'' canvases.
I then transferred the sketch onto the three prepped canvases using graphite transfer paper. I did this by placing the sketch on top of the transfer paper, which was placed on top of a canvas. I traced all the lines of my original sketch so that the graphite paper would make an imprint of the sketch onto the canvas. I repeated this process for all three canvases.
After the sketch was transferred, I blocked in colors, added details, and finishing touches to the pieces.
One of the challenges was learning to use the different mediums. Also, once I learned them, switching back and forth between mediums to draw the same thing was difficult since each medium requires different techniques.
