Hi, my name is Lucy Land. In this episode, I'll be discussing my IP10 project. At Grace Church School, all 10th-grade students have the opportunity to delve into a topic they're passionate about. Throughout my life, I've struggled with focus, particularly when it comes to school work. My aim with this project is to help individuals who easily get distracted in improving their focus and completing tasks efficiently.
I have ADHD, although I wasn't diagnosed until 8th grade. Consequently, throughout middle school, I didn't receive accommodations that would have helped me greatly. This lack of recognition might be attributed to the fact that ADHD is presented differently in girls than boys. While boys often exhibit overt symptoms like loudness and hyperactivity, girls tend to display subtler signs. As a result, a significant number of undiagnosed children with ADHD are girls. Moreover, obtaining an ADHD diagnosis can be prohibitively expensive for many individuals.
Music has always been a strategy I've relied on to enhance my focus. By curating a study playlist tailored specifically for girls and students in general, I hope to create an inexpensive way to help students with attention issues or ADHD in completing their work, without falling behind.
To develop this playlist, I'm combining external research with experementation. During my first IP10 week I used my time to collect all the needed materials for my test. I ran my experiment during the second IP10 week. My study involved 10-20 girls solving math problems while listening to different genres of music. I varied the music order in each round to ensure accurate data collection. I measured both speed and the accuracy of the math problems.
My testing helped me conclude that ambient mustic is the best music for studying. Later on in my project, I will combine this data with my research, ultimately producing a study playlist.
Thank you for listening!
