Trained in pedagogy and youth development, YTY Mentors bring science education to life, making science engagement fun and accessible to students in the Glendale area. They help create lasting impressions of both natural history and science inquiry.
Specifically, YTY Mentors work with YTY program staff and YTY high school participants to engage middle school students in weekly science training and activities. Mentors are trained to help high school participants manage small groups, help facilitate the middle school students’ development of science process and teaching skills, and model enthusiasm for learning. During these weekly activities, volunteers will inspire learning, support youth development, and foster in-depth engagement with natural history and science.
The location for this position is at Glendale Middle School, not at the Museum. (Transportation from the Museum to Glendale is provided if needed.)
Training Required:
Most of the specific training for this position will be on-the-job.
YTY Mentors will also arrange to meet with YTY program staff for an hour to discuss mentor expectations and program philosophy/pedagogy sometime before beginning work with the middle school students.
Shift times:
Monday afternoons from 3:00pm – 5:00pm
Time Commitment: Each Monday afternoon, starting in September and going through mid-May, except public holidays and school vacations.
Age Requirement: Minimum of 18 years of age.
