Department: Vertebrate Department
Supervisor: Katrina Derieg, Vertebrate Zoology Collections Manager
Vertebrate Collections and Field Work volunteers are responsible for working with vertebrate specimens and many capacities, including specimen preparation, storage, databasing, and maintenance. Attention to detail is important not only because the specimens are fragile, but because future research relies on the appropriate preparation of specimens. Specimen information is entered into a database so the wealth of information contained in our collection can be made available to the larger zoological community.
Volunteers may also work in the field with Vertebrate Collection staff, trapping and collecting live vertebrates to be returned to NHMU for our collection and for future research.
Shift times:
A set schedule will be determined based on the availability of the volunteer and the supervisor, but we request that in the beginning, on-site work take place within the normal work week.
Field work will take place during the summer months, and will be coordinated with the supervisor.
Time Commitment:
For on-site work, a minimum of three hours per week is requested for a duration of 6 months, but more is always appreciated!
For field work, a minimum of 14 days in the field per field season is requested.
Age Requirement: 18 years or older
