Department: School Outreach, Education and Community Engagement
Supervisor: Aidan Bailey, School Outreach Coordinator
Museum on the Move volunteers support an educational outreach opportunity that is offered to every school in Utah for free. Volunteers will join Museum educators in 4th grade classrooms, leading students in inquiry learning and teaching core concepts such as “making observations and inferences” through the lens of a science topic. Students will have hands-on opportunities to explore Museum specimens. Museum on the Move volunteers will aid presenters with classroom engagement using the inquiry style of education by interacting with students during classroom activities, and facilitating activity stations. Topics covered include: Adaptations, Fossils, Archaeology, Rocks and Minerals, and the Great Salt Lake.
Training Required:
Volunteers will receive training on inquiry-based education and program content. Volunteers will have the opportunity to shadow staff as they learn the program.
Shift times:
Classes are 90-minutes long and are scheduled during the regular school day, between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Specific dates will be dependent on when the Museum on the Move program is scheduled at a school near you. The education team follows the school schedule, with a break in December and January.
Time Commitment: Museum on the Move volunteers will participate in a minimum of 10 classes during fall semester, and 10 classes during the spring semester, for the September – May school year.
Age Requirement: 18 years or older
