Department: Operations
Supervisor: Museum Grounds Caretaker
Landscape Stewards are a hugely important factor in the success of NHMU’s effort to keep its 17 acres of landscaping “green” by not using herbicides. With training in native plants and invasive weeds, they protect our natural landscape in the foothills, helping to preserve the natural history that is right outside our doors.
Landscape Steward volunteers have an opportunity to learn the plants of the foothills and assist the museum with invasive species removal, biodiversity observation, and trail signage upkeep. Under the direction of the grounds supervisor, volunteers are responsible for manually checking the grounds for noxious or invasive species, and removing weeds as needed. This position includes physical labor (hiking, kneeling, bending, lifting, tool use, etc.) and working in a variety of weather conditions.
Training Required:
Volunteers receive ongoing one-on-one training on the noxious and invasive plant species in our area, and how to safely identify and remove them.
Shift times:
Monday- Friday mornings between 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Time Commitment: A minimum of two hours per week is requested through from April through October, but more time is always appreciated!
Age Requirement: Minimum of 16 years of age
