Foothill Nature Walk volunteers join scientists and curators from the NHMU and Red Butte Garden on 45-minute tours of the wildflowers, weeds, and insects that thrive in the foothills above Salt Lake City. Walk participants enjoy the spectacular view around our campus and learn how to identify common flowers and their pollinators. Volunteers are expected to attend each walk to assist with guest check-in, help with crowd management, and be in contact with the NHMU in case of a medical emergency.
Staff involved includes: Christy Bills, Entomology & Malacology Collections Manager (NHMU), and either Jason Baker, Curator of Plant Records/Botanist (RBG), Sarah Sandoval, Education Outreach Coordinator (RBG), or Heidi Simper, Assistant Curator (RBG)
Training Required:
Volunteers attend one pre-walk where everyone on staff can meet, establish a walking route together, go over the guest check-in process, ensure folks are comfortable with their roles, etc.
Shift times: Occur April through May, and are held in the morning (11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.), or at sunset (5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.)
Time Commitment: This is a temporary position. Foothill Nature Walk volunteers must be able to attend all 5 walks, and 1 additional pre-walk.
Age Requirement: 18 years or older
