Members of the scholarship committee review 20-40 scholarship applications from across the District and rates them using a rubric based on their goals, academic successes and perceived financial needs. I have found this process rewarding as it is very heartening to see how hard students are working in so many ways to make their education happen.

Assessment Leadership [2001-2023]
Assessment has taken on an ever increasing importance in the academic arena. Although a huge surge of this interest began with inquiries from government and accrediting groups, the push to DOCUMENT assessment was really what has been changed over time. All instructors constantly assess their students and adjust their teaching regularly. The problem was that teachers were not "making visible what's invisible." As such, assessment as a whole has evolved to include conscious reporting of assessment successes.
I began in 2001 as the department representative for assessment and, as my interest and experience increased, proceeded to first lead course-level reporting for a significant portion of the campus, then as a sub-chair on an administrator-run committee called the CART (College Assessment and Review Team). Once the administrators decided to return the directing of assessment to faculty, I was then tasked with being the campus director for course-level assessment and then as co-chair for the same assessment process. Other leaders across campus were responsible for institutional and program assessment. Although assessment was being done, the documentation and communication between groups was sporadic and scattered.
Finally, in 2015, the college tasked Dr. Julie Morrison with directing the assessment program for the whole college. Her leadership has been invaluable in pulling all the pieces together for all the different people involved in assessment as well as all the different processes that are taking place across the campus. I am proud to have watched a coherent and concrete assessment program come to fruition while serving as her assistant director. I believe my extensive knowledge and historical perspective have helped me to guide significant improvement and change as part of this process. Please see more about the assessment program at GCC on the GAUCHO (Glendale Assessment Unites to Change Outcomes) website.
