REFLECTION ABOUT PPST DOMAINS
The Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers aims to; set out clear expectations of teachers along well-defines career stages of professional development from beginning to distinguished practice; engage teachers to actively embrace a continuing effort in attaining proficiency; and apply uniform measure to assess teacher performance, identify needs, and provide support for professional development. There are 7 domains collectively comprises 37 strands that refers to more specific dimensions of teacher practices. These are; Content Knowledge and Pedagogy, Learning Environment, Diversity of Learners , Curriculum and Planning , Assessment and Reporting , Community Linkages and Professional Engagement , and Professional Growth and Development. Here are my reflections:
Domain 1: Content Knowledge and Pedagogy
This domain emphasizes the importance of teachers’ mastery of the content and the ability to deliver the lesson effectively with their pedagogical skills. As a beginning teacher, I make sure that before teaching, I master the content I’m going to teach and make sure that the activities of the students will target their holistic development. I integrate other subjects for better understanding and using Higher Order Thinking Skills questions with the use of arts of questioning method. Everyday is a learning process for me, knowing my students; their skills and capabilities, allow me to adapt different learning styles and teaching methods and strategies to meet all their needs possible.
Domain 2: Learning Environment
This domain focuses on the learning environment of the students. Creating and maintaining a positive learning environment where students will feel safe, respected, accepted, and motivated. When I was on my observation and assistantship course, I make sure that everyone is supported and motivated to reach their full potential in all aspects. Now, that I am on my teaching internship, I establish clear expectations and rules inside the classroom. Routines that allow learners to understand every actions and behaviors being done. In simply saying words that shows respect and acts that shows empathy, I made the classroom conducive to learning, allows growth, and build a good relationship towards and among my students.
Domain 3: Diversity of
Learners
This domain, gives importance on recognizing and addressing the diverse needs, capabilities, backgrounds, and learning styles of the students. Reflecting on this domain, I learned that as teacher one of the important thing that I need to do to be effective, is I should accept the uniqueness of every students. All of them differ, but I believe that they have something to offer based from their own strengths, skills, and capabilities. In my teaching internship, I always value what each student brings, acknowledge and respect their works and opinions, and most importantly I tried incorporating differentiated instructions to give them the opportunity to participate.
Domain 4: Curriculum and Planning
In this domain it emphasizes the roles of teachers as curriculum designers and implementers. I may not a full pledge educator, but as a beginning teacher, I manage and try to make a well-crafted lesson plans for it is my road map for a good flow of teaching. I always make sure that everything that I include in my lesson plan is valid and intentional planning that takes into account not only the content but also the overall development of my students. I believe that it is not just about achieving academic success but at the same time preparing students to the real world challenges. That is why, I always make sure that my lesson plan is guided by my cooperating teacher, taking notes of recommendations and advices for a better road map and I make effort to target the holistic development of my students.
Domain 5: Assessment and Reporting
In this domain it emphasizes the importance of assessment and reporting in the learning process of every learner. Every demonstration teaching, I always make sure that the assessment that I will employ is align to the learning objectives. Giving them positive and constructive criticism towards their works to motivate and guide them. In my journey as a beginning teacher, I always try to create a more supportive, transparent, and personalized learning experience that empowers my students to reach their full potential. Progress is better than perfection.
This domain highlights the significance of fostering strong community connections and engaging in continuous professional development to improve teaching effectiveness. In my daily interactions within the school, I frequently engage with the parents and relatives of my students. I make a good effort to build positive relationships with them, keeping them informed about their child’s academic progress and behavior inside the classroom. I believe that if the school and home of the students are collaboratively making efforts and connections, it builds a strong foundation for learners to develop their holistic self.
Domain 7: Professional Growth and Development
I may not be a professional teacher who undergo lots of teaching experiences, but as a beginning teacher who always try to make progress and self-growth in this program. In every demonstration teaching, right after every session, I always reflect on my performance as the teacher of my students. I always try to pin point what do I need to improve, what should I do next, and what strategies and methods should I try to be effective. Taking notes of every details in every demonstration allows me to have self-growth and development to my passion in teaching. Like in the quotation “Once a teacher, forever a learner.”
