MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."

-William Butler Yeats

Education is widely recognized as the foundation upon which students build their futures. It equips them with the knowledge, skills, and ideas necessary to succeed in their careers and beyond. However, education is more than just academic preparation; it provides students with the opportunity to develop holistically, fostering both personal and academic growth, and the way for their success in all areas of life.

In teaching students, it is important that we observe a lot of factors in the students lives, their capabilities, their home environment, and the society/environment they are in. Giving importance to those factors will help the teacher to identify the needs, methods, and materials to be used in teaching.

In connection with William Butler’s quotation, I believe that an effective teacher is not just filling of a pail where students receive the knowledge and skills, but the teacher who lights the fire that ignites the passion, curiosity and love for learning in every learners. It is given that diversity of learners is crucial in teaching, but I think it is the factor that impacts teaching and learning. Teachers should adapt with different learning styles and various teaching methods, students may have their own uniqueness, but I believe that each of the students has something to offer; their unique talents and skills. It is the matter of nurturing their capabilities and skills by providing them meaningful, engaging, and interactive way of teaching and learning. I believe that learners are able to learn through their senses and experiences during their academic years. That is why teachers should not limit their task in just teaching students but also extending their work in making every learner capable and are reaching their full potential. Most importantly, I believe that teaching is about cultivating the holistic growth in each learner for it is about lighting up the fire within them. I am in this journey because I was also one of those students who’s motivated, encourage and challenged by many of my teachers to be the best version of myself and develop the love for learning. Now, in this field of profession will be a long journey for me to be a learner and a teacher who brought changes in the lives of my students.

As teachers, we have different roles inside the classroom; we are their teacher, mother, friend, guidance counselor, and many more. We are known to teach students different knowledge and skills, but we must remember that in teaching them, we should observe their academic performance and behavior as students to bridge the gap in their learning process. Teachers are the provider of students needs and guidance for their actions and behaviors.
