Students in the 7th grade band will continue to learn more about music and how to play as a band, and will have more performance opportunities throughout the year. It's incredible the amount of improvement the students make during their 7th grade year, while having so much FUN playing music as a band!
Performance dates and information are listed HERE
Instrument
Black 3 ring binder (1" preferred)
Chromebook
Pencil
Combination lock - optional (if a student chooses to use a school band locker)
The 7th Grade Band will wear the same "uniform" for all performances, and we want our band students to look their best! The uniform will be:
White WMS Band Polo Shirt
Black Pants/Skirt
Black Socks
Black Shoes
Information will be sent home early in the school year about how to get a white polo shirt.
If a family is having any financial trouble and cannot affort the polo shirt or any of the uniform pieces please contact Mr. Finkbeiner.
Band students will receive a 10 point daily grade based on the following factors:
Being prepared - ready to learn with instrument, music, pencil
Rehearsal Skills - a lot of time will be spent teaching and explaining what a band student does during a rehearsal. The main factors are fully participating in the class, and not disrupting the educational process. A more detailed rehearsal skills rubric can be found HERE.
In class assignments, concert & recording evaluations, playing checks/tests and performances will also be a part of the students grades.
Is it typically easy to get a good grade in band? YES! As long as students are showing up prepared, take time to learn their music, and participate in the class and performances it is quite easy to get a good grade in band!
How much time should students practicing their instrument?
Is practicing required?
Will a student fail if they don't practice???
While practicing for 7th & 8th graders is not a requirement, many students will want to find time to practice on a regular basis. A good goal for most students would be to practice for 30-60 minutes a week outside of the class.
Students that want to particiapte in Solo & Ensemble, All State Band Auditions, or Honors Band will need to find time outside the band classroom to work on their music. If a student has a hard time practicing at home, we can work out a time for students to practice during their lunch if they want to use that time to practice.
Private Lessons are also a great way to help the student deepen their understanding of the instrument, and can help them take their playing to the next level. CLICK HERE to go to the Private Lesson Page.
Band lockers are available for most instruments in the band, and students who wish to use a band locker will need to provide their own COMBINATION LOCK for the locker. NO KEY LOCKS!
Instruments that use band lockers:
Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Trumpet, French Horn
Larg instruments will use the instrument storage room and will not need a band locker. Those include:
Trombone, Baritone, Tuba, Tenor saxophone
Students can also choose to keep their instrument in their school locker, but most students like having their instrument in a band locker.
