HyFlex, short for Hybrid-Flexible, is a course design method and teaching approach that was designed to better accommodate student needs by combining online and face-to-face classroom experiences. Participants can choose whether they want to attend online, head to the classroom/meeting room, or do both, giving them the freedom to attend when and where they want based on their own needs, desires, and preferences.
Classrooms with HyFlex technology at GateWay (CH1053, IE2212, MA1196, MA2223) give instructors the ability to teach in-person and remote learners simultaneously, or to record their lectures for their online sections while teaching face-to-face, depending on their preferences, needs, or course design.
Additional Readings on the HyFlex Classroom
Instructors will prepare course content and material for both in-person and online access. All learning material should equally address and support learning outcomes, regardless of the delivery medium. This way, whether a student attends class in a face-to-face environment, remotely through their computer, or by watching a recording if a recording is available, the learning objectives and results will remain equivalent. Though it may seem daunting, with some guidance and preparation, the HyFlex model can help overcome many of the obstacles posed now and be a straight line to our future teaching and learning environments.
Many classes being held with HyFlex technology will involve interacting with students who are in face-to-face and online sections at the same time. Some instructors also make lecture recordings available as an option for students to watch in an asynchronous setting. In order to accommodate students accessing your class through these different means, you may need to consider the following when teaching a class with multiple audiences. Remember... you do not have to learn and understand all the tools at once! Take it slow, and add new tools and techniques as you become more comfortable teaching in a classroom with HyFlex technology.

Keeping track of and engaging with questions or comments from remote learners can be challenging for one person to do while also working with face-to-face students. Consider asking students to volunteer to monitor the chat and non-verbal communication (i.e. a raised hand) that your remote learners may use to ask questions or provide feedback. That person can then raise their hand in-person or interject on behalf of the remote learners. Make sure remote learners know who will be doing this so they can reach out if their question goes unanswered.
Tech Tool Tip: Use an online spinner to select students at random. This ensures that every will get a turn to support the class learning by monitoring chat and raised hands in the classroom. https://wheelofnames.com
