Reality in Career Exploration

The video by UCSF Mind (2018) explains the realities of career exploration. After completing the interest inventories on the previous page and reviewing the results, you might have a better idea of what type of occupations may suit you the best. Keep in mind, there are hundreds of occupations to explore. Research those that interest you and make a list.  Sometimes the best research helps you decide what does NOT interest you!

#Futuready: Exploring Careers

The video on left suggests items to consider when you begin your career search. What are you good at? How long are you willing to be in school? Know your interests but understand that interests can change.  Get future ready TODAY! (National Junior Honor Society, 2021).

Career One Stop

Career One Stop Pathways to Career Success has everything you need to get started exploring careers. Watch videos on occupations, get job descriptions, find the skills and education needed to be successful at certain occupation. Career One Stop even has potential job growth. This is a great website to launch your exploration.

The Occupational Outlook Handbook (OOH) provides even more occupation information. Explore the various occupation groups by interest. Search occupations by pay, entry level-education, or any number of other areas of interest (U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics, 2021). Use the A-Z Index to search by job title. Watch the short video below to help you get an idea of how to use the OOH. Then, click on the link on the right to begin your career exploration on the OOH.

Grant Baldwin interviews ordinary people with some extraordinary occupations for his podcasts. What is a Puzzle Editor? How do you become a LEGO Master Builder? Not only can you learn about unique occupations, but Baldwin also has topics on what is needed to be successful and productive. Listen to some of the podcasts and you might find an ideal occupation that you never would have considered! (Baldwin, 2014 - 2015).
