About the Conference

This interdisciplinary conference provides a scholarly forum for the systematic investigation of the historical, cultural, economic, and civilizational significance of the Garmian region in Southern Kurdistan. Encompassing an extensive chronological framework from the Late Bronze Age to the Middle age period including the eras of the late Bronze Age, Neo-Assyrian, Achaemenid, Parthian, Sasanian, and successive Islamic empires the proceedings will critically assess Garmian’s enduring function as a zone of trans-regional interaction. Contributions will highlight its role as a hub of economic networks and commercial activity, a strategically contested landscape of imperial ambition and administrative integration, and a dynamic centre of religious pluralism and cultural production. Through the integrated analysis of archaeological evidence and textual sources, the conference seeks to advance a nuanced understanding of Garmian’s multifaceted historical legacy, examining its distinctive contributions to artistic expression, diverse belief systems from local cults and Zoroastrianism to Christianity and Islam and the evolving social structures that characterized this critical region from antiquity through the middle age period.
