COURSE OVERVIEW
In Animation 1, students learn about the history of animation and the techniques associated with it. They learn traditional animation skills like rotoscoping, stop-motion, and cel animation and combine them with digital programs like Adobe After Effects and Photoshop.
"What If" Story Assignment
When working in groups, pick three things/objects and select three locations you are interested in. Once you have those elements, combine them to tell a "What if?" story. Include dialog and artwork as well.
Animation 101
Students learn about the history of early animation, the types of animation, and the 12 Principles of Animation.
Storyboard Pitch Assignment
"A significant animation company allows you to pitch an original story idea to them. Requirements: You must tell your story from the beginning to the end using only six storyboard panels. You have to use elements from the 12 Principles of Animation and choose a form of animation to tell your story."
The Basic Bouncing Ball
The students used Adobe Photoshop to create a basic Bouncing Ball animation.
Then, they have to tell a story using the Bouncing Ball.
Rotoscope Animation
Students take live-action footage and draw over it using rotoscope animation.
RotoApe Assignment
Using Adobe After Effects, students turn a video of a gorilla into a piece of art!
RotoBird Assignment
Rotoscope animations in Adobe Photoshop. They start by tracing the outlines and details of a Green Bird and drawing it on the computer frame-by-frame, and then coloring it in.
Original Rotoscope Project
Taking what they learned from their previous rotoscope assignments, they create original rotoscope animations using footage they filmed or edited clips.
Stop-Motion Animation
Students work to create original stop-motion projects using clay, figures, and paper.
Cel Animation
Learning about Keyframes (or Extreme Frames), Breakdowns, and Inbetweens. Hand-drawn and painted cel sheets created by students using the McCay Split System Method.

Hand-drawn cels, students learn how to create extreme and breakdown frames,
