Shrek The Musical JR. follows the adventures of an ogre named Shrek who sets off on a quest to save a princess from a dragon. However, it turns out that in order to ultimately succeed, Shrek must battle an even bigger obstacle: learning how to believe in himself and open his heart to others.
The family-friendly musical comedy is the story of an ogre named Shrek who has learned the hard way that “people hate the things they cannot understand.” For many years he has protected himself from the hurtful actions of those who are scared of him by living as a recluse in a cozy cesspit. One day, his peaceful swamp is disturbed by new tenants: fairytale misfits — including Pinocchio, the Ugly Duckling, the Wicked Witch, Peter Pan, the Three Pigs and the Big Bad Wolf — have been banished there by the villainous Lord Farquaad. In order to gain back his land, Shrek makes a deal with Farquaad to rescue the feisty princess Fiona from a tower guarded by a fierce dragon. Setting off with his faithful companion, Donkey, Shrek begins the journey of a lifetime filled with adventure, romance, and hilarity.
With music by Jeanine Tesori, book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire, Shrek The Musical is based on the Oscar®-winning DreamWorks Animation film and the book Shrek by William Steig.

DIRECTOR'S NOTE
Welcome to UWCSEA East Campus’ production of Shrek the Musical Jr. On the surface, Shrek seems a simple story about an ogre who goes on a journey to get his swamp back. But underneath is a story about being true to who you are and building relationships with the people who appreciate you most… with flatulence jokes. It seemed a fitting choice for UWCSEA East first Middle School Musical since 2014.
A musical is a huge undertaking at any time, but post covid and with the gap since the last musical, the collaboration, creativity and adaptability of the team have been amazing. Jamee’s gentle vocal instruction, Lauren’s patient choreography, Lorna’s invaluable institutional knowledge, Geoff and Heather’s wonderful support and Tony and Lee’s amazing work with the band have been greatly appreciated by a director attempting an ambitious musical as her first show in a new school. The wider team, Nadiah, Manuel, Shi Han, Thomas, Kaz, Allister and Theresa, all with impressive professional expertise, have shown patience and support throughout the process.
Lastly, a note about the cast. We have 61 performers, 4 students working backstage, and another 7 students playing in the band, including one very talented Grade 6 trumpet player. As a naturally hilarious bunch, they have brought energy and creativity to rehearsals, shown commitment and most importantly been instrumental in ‘finding the fun’. For many of these students this is their first performance at UWCSEA, and for others this is the first show they have ever been involved with. They have managed to sing, dance and act, often at the same time, which I assure you is no mean feat. They are a truly impressive group of individuals and I consider myself very lucky to have gone through this experience with them.
Thank you for supporting us in watching our show. I hope you enjoy the ‘Big Bright Beautiful World’ we have created.
