2025 has started off with another set of highlights as our students ventured into different styles of theatre. Scroll through to look at some of our highlights so far and stay tuned to see what's in store for the coming months!
Middle School Drama had their Middle School Production in collaboration with Circus - Haroun and the Sea of Stories - in June this year. With a wonderful cast and crew who brought the novel written by Salman Rushdie to life, the audience was amazed by the mix of theatrical and circus elements presented by the students.
Haroun's father is a renowned storyteller, but one day the sea of stories dries up. Haroun sets out on an adventure to restore the poisoned source of the sea of stories. On the way he encounters many foes, intent on draining the sea of all its storytelling powers.

Our Town explores the relationship between two young Grover’s Corners neighbors, George Gibbs and Emily Webb, whose childhood friendship blossoms into romance, and then culminates in marriage. When Emily loses her life in childbirth, the circle of life portrayed in each of the three acts of Our Town–growing up, adulthood, and death–is fully realized.
Wilder offers a backdrop for an exploration of the universal human experience. The simple story of a love affair is constantly rediscovered because it asks timeless questions about the meaning of love, life and death. “Oh, earth, you’re too wonderful for anybody to realize you” (www.thorntonwilder.com/our-town)
Grade 11 Visual Art and Theatre students have explored key themes in the play and learned about directing, lighting, composition and emphatic storytelling with Canadian photographer artist in residence Damian Siqueiros. The Art students have created stunning photographs with the support of theatre students. Furthermore, Theatre students have produced, directed, designed and are performing in their own production of this classic play.
On February 19th, solo performances were held in the Drama studios at UWCSEA East campus to mark the final stage of the IBDP Grade 12 Theatre exams. 19 HL students conceptualised, designed, directed, and performed their own unique theatre pieces, each inspired by their chosen practitioner. The department is incredibly proud of their achievements and the learning they have gained throughout the process.
A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM [2025]
Our Balinese-inspired rendition of Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream has successfully completed after three spectacular and fantastical nights from 20th to 22nd January with such supportive and engaged audiences! We hope you had as much fun as we did as we 'transported' you from Singapore to Bali as you stepped into our Black Box for our performances of this high school production! Thank YOU to all who took time to come down to support our students in this learning process and for helping to spread the word!
Three sold out shows and three magical nights was accomplished!
2024 has been another great year of learning, growth, development, and exploration for our students. Scroll down and take a look at some student highlights with Drama!
The UWCSEA High School Programme has enabled new opportunities for impactful learning over the past 18 months. On 12th December, the Grade 10 Drama students had the chance to present their research, practical exploration and teaching of a chosen tradition of either Indonesian Topeng or Wayang Kulit to their parents. The learning, sharing and reflections in the wonderful world of Bali on the 5th floor was simply magical. Thank you to the parents for attending and making it a beautiful experience for us all.
Grade 10UWC Drama Masks and Puppets Sharing with Parents
Our Student Theatre Festival in 2024 completed successfully after 3 nights of performances! As always, we are immensely proud of all the students who were involved in all three productions - Equus, The Chrysalids, Las Cartas del Cabo (The Cape Letters). The students have learned, devised, collaborated, and designed together to put up works that are meaningful to them to bring across thought-provoking messages. We are heartened to witness the growth of the student directors, cast, and crew who participated in these student-led productions.
We would like to thank everyone who has helped to make Student Theatre Festival 2024 possible and thank YOU, all our lovely supportive audience, who came down on 26th to 28th November to watch the performances!!
Grade 12 Collaborative Projects
In the week of 18th November, our Grade 12 IBDP Theatre students performed their Collaborative Projects. The IBDP Theatre Collaborative Project task requires students to devise an original theatre performance. Through the exploration of diverse techniques and styles from a range of different devising companies, the students work collaboratively from a starting point to experiment, create, refine and present a 7-10 minutes performance piece.
The performances were a testament to the hard work and commitment of the G12 Theatre students resulting in challenging and thought provoking pieces exploring a range of their ideas. The Drama Dept is proud, as always, of our Theatre students.

In November, our Grade 10 Drama students have collaborated in groups to perform in short performances based on short extracts from different scripts given to them. The students have worked creatively to embody varied characters, work as an ensemble, and to use a combination of dramatic elements and devices to convey the message and meanings from the stories.

At the end of September, the East Drama department recently ran the ISTA TaPS PERSPECTIVES trip to Hanoi Vietnam for our IBDP theatre students, giving them the unique opportunity to work intensively alongside other theatre students from schools across South East Asia. They were immersed in Vietnamese culture and traditions throughout the 3 days’ workshops focusing on key drama approaches and styles.
Our students engaged with a range of Vietnamese theatre practitioners and had a rich and fun weekend learning about Theatre through a global perspective and making new connections and friendships.
"Hundreds of theatre kids coming from all around Asia, all learning, collaborating, and devising theatre creates such a fun, inspirational, and meaningful environment. I've made some great friends, and learnt so much I can bring back to IB Theatre, and to everyday life!" - Student Reflection
"The whole trip was a fantastic learning opportunity to enhance my theatre skills, and experience a global perspective on what and how theatre can be." - Student Reflection
Exploring World Traditions for the Research Presentation task for IBDP Theatre
September is a power-packed happening month as both HL and SL Theatre Students also planned, delivered and video recorded an individual research presentation (15 minutes maximum) in which they evidenced their academic and practical explorations of a performance convention from a world theatre tradition.
The Research Presentation is distinctive among the Theatre assessment tasks as it requires students to hypothetically cross time and space in order to authentically engage with a dynamic theatre tradition of another culture.

Artist-in-Residence with Rucina Ballinger and I Made Sidia (Kecak)
Our High School Drama was privileged to host Bali artists Rucina Ballinger and I Made Sidia to teach Kecak for an engaging and immersive learning experience for the Grade 9 and Grade 12 Drama students during lesson time on 18th September. Both Rucina and I Made Sidia are prominent global artists and were outstanding with the work they did with the classes.
Rucina is one of Bali’s cultural icons. She has lived in Bali since 1974 when she did intensive study of dance and its relationship to religion. Her book, co authored with I Wayan Dibia, BALINESE DANCE, DRAMA AND MUSIC: AN INTRODUCTION TO BALINESE PERFORMING ARTS is used in classrooms around the world to know more about the performing arts in context. I Made Sidia is a well known wayang kulit (traditional Balinese shadow puppets) master – dalang. He also teaches at Denpasar Institute of Art and is the director of Paripurna Art company in his village Bona. He is a Topeng (traditional Balinese mask dance) dancer, gamelan player, and director of many local and international performances and workshops.
Artist-in-Residence with Lian Sutton (Topeng)
The UWCSEA Programme has enabled new opportunities for powerful learning and the Grade 9 Drama students had the chance to learn and explore the tradition of Indonesian Topeng in class with our Artist-in-Residence Lian Sutton in September.
The students had an interesting experience donning the Topeng masks and embodying the characteristics of the mask through their instinctual movements, sounds, and interactions with other masked characters. The learning, sharing and reflections in the wonderful world of masks on the 5th floor was simply magical.
In the month of September, our High School and Middle School students recently had the opportunity to participate in an artist-in-residence workshop with Alys Hill, the driving force behind Liminal Physical Theatre in Christchurch, New Zealand.
During the workshop, students explored energy and control through the practical application of Suzuki's acting techniques. Alys, a teaching artist specializing in physical theatre, has trained extensively in The Suzuki Method of Actor Training, The Viewpoints, and Butoh dance theatre worldwide. Liminal Physical Theatre, under her leadership, is known for creating and performing original, innovative theatre works both in New Zealand and internationally, while also offering expert training in various physical theatre methods.

The Twelve Huntsmen (2024)
Middle School Drama had their Middle School Production - The Twelve Huntsmen - in June this year with an amazing cast and crew who brought the fairytales written by the Grimm Brothers into life. The audience had a hilariously good time jumping from one story to the next, and each story had their own lessons to be learned.
The Brothers Grimm, tromping through the forest in search of fairy tales, stumble into a magical story of their own. The princess “Cesario” and a band of eleven outcasts have disguised themselves as Huntsmen to get close to the Prince who is betrothed to another. Throughout the night, the Huntsman share their table and their stories with the Brothers Grimm, helping Cesario to find her own happily ever after.

THROWBACK TIME...
Here's a throwback to our Student Theatre Festival in November 2023! We had the chance to meet up with some of the students involved in the student-led productions from the directors to tech crews to find out how the experience was for them.
From the interesting ways they found themselves involved in the productions to how the entire process has left a deep impression on them and enabled them to pick up certain skills, hear from the students themselves in their full interviews that are exclusively on this website!

Student Theatre Festival (2023)
"...when someone thinks of acting, they immediately go to the actors and the people on the stage but they never think about the people behind the stage who make it all happen and that's something really interesting and cool that I found quite unique."
Karanja, Lighting
"...I think doing a tech role has been so amazing for me because I've always been really interested in theatre and really loved watching performances and things like that, but acting's really just not for me, it's not my cup of tea but I was able to be a part of [a production] and work on it and still have this end-product which I feel that I put a lot of work into without having to be on the stage..."
Lexie, Lighting
Red Leap War of the Worlds (2023)
Click here to view the ones for Red Leap War of the Worlds and relive some of their production moments!!
What were some personal takeaways, and would you direct again?
"...dealing with that stress is what changed us as human beings because we learned a lot of skills of like fast-paced thinking and problem solving in very time-pressured conditions..."
"I am happy to have worked with a co-director on this, if I were to work with a co-director, I would definitely do it again. If it was just me, maybe focus on a scripted piece. But this entire experience was very well done, I think, and very well planned out for us as well, so I think I would definitely do it again."
Hana & Harshini,
Directors of Red Leap War of the Worlds
How was the Sound Production Process like, and how did you feel?
"...sound involves like technical aspects using the sound board or learning how to layer sounds using the application so it was a daunting and kind of scary process at the beginning and also because we were a completely devised production, it was new to try to find the story without a script... So it was really challenging in the beginning trying to navigate both the technical and the aesthetic aspects but I think that the challenge was part of the fun..."
Jamie,
Sound Designer for Red Leap War of the Worlds
The Love of the Nightingale (Grade 11 Production)
Grade 11 IBDP Theatre students have been working on their page to stage task covering all aspects of putting on a production. They presented this work in the last week of term in the Black Box on Wednesday 27th March at 5pm and 7pm. The work undertaken challenges the students to recontextualise and interpret a classic Greek myth leading into a fully realised show designed, directed and performed by the Grade 11 students.
The Love of the Nightingale by playwright Timberlake Wertenbaker, is an adaptation of the ancient Greek myth of Philomela. The production follows the violent manipulation of Philomela by her brother-in-law, Tereus, and her subsequent silencing. Through the use of male and female choruses, the play tells the story of a woman who refuses to be silenced, despite the powerful patriarchal society. Exploring status and power dynamics, the play highlights the importance of questioning injustices in society.

MS Devised Productions 2023
Devised theatre is a method of creating drama where the performers use creativity, collaboration, and experimentation to create a piece of theatre completely from the ground up, using no predetermined script. This year we have two performances - Elements and Mad Flight - where two different casts of Grade 7s and 8s with two different stimulus have created their very own devised pieces.
Mad Flight: 8th December (Fri) - 5pm
We are extremely proud of the students who participated, devised, and performed for the production of Mad Flight on 8th December. They worked hard and came up with a piece that was moving and relevant for the times. A big and warm thank you to all who supported and came down to watch the performance.
Now remember "stay off your phones" and let's be present with the people who matter this holiday season!
Elements - 4th December (Mon)
Thank you to all who came to watch the devised pieces that our Grade 7 and 8 students created these past few months for Elements. We hope you enjoyed yourselves and remember to reduce, reuse, and recycle to help the environment!
Our Student Theatre Festival has completed successfully after 3 nights of performances! We are so very proud of all the students who were involved in this year's three different productions - Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Boy Overboard, Red Leap War of the Worlds. The students have worked extremely hard for the past 4 months where they devised, collaborated, and designed to put up works that they can call their 'own'. It is always heartening to witness the growth of the students who participate in these student-led productions.
We would like to thank every single individual who has helped to make Student Theatre Festival 2023 possible and thank you to all the audiences who came down on 20th to 22nd November to watch and support our students!!

Behind-the-Scenes of the Student Theatre Festival 2023
UWCSEA East Drama Department has been very excited to welcome back Artist-in-Residence Red Leap Theatre Company from New Zealand. We are so proud of our partnership established back in 2016 and value the expertise that they bring to the students' work and understanding of theatre making.
Red Leap is a Theatre company that is bold, visual and ignites the imagination. Based in Aotearoa New Zealand, Red Leap crosses the forms of physical theatre, imagery and storytelling and believe in playful discovery, the power of the imagination, and building a strong ensemble of performers.
Students in Grades 6, 7, 8, 9,10, 11 and 12 engaged with Red Leap face to face all week . They explored devising approaches, structures, exercises and theatrical styles which enables them to keep filling their drama toolbox for future use!

ISTA TAPS - October 2023
Some of our IBDP Theatre students had the opportunity to participate in the ISTA TAPS programme over one of the weekends in October where they had an amazing time in the 3-day intensive training learning from international theatre practitioners and interacting with other IBDP Theatre students from all around Asia.
We spoke to a few of our Grade 11 and Grade 12 IBDP Theatre students who attended the programme to hear about their experience and takeaways. You can watch their interviews below and hear from the students first-hand!
Both HL and SL Grade 12 IBDP Theatre Students planned, delivered and video recorded an individual research presentation in which they evidenced their academic and practical explorations of a performance convention from a world theatre tradition.

This week artist-in-residence Mr Biju from Bhaskar Arts Academy came to work with our Grade 12 IBDP students teaching them the Theatre tradition of Kathakali. This workshop has kicked off their exploration phase of the Research Presentation assignment asking them to think about the cultural context of the dance drama.
Kathakali is a form of classical Indian dance that hails from the Malayalam-speaking southwestern region of Kerala, India. It is a "story play" genre of performance art which is characterised by elaborate make-up and costumes. Like other Indian classical dance forms, a Kathakali performance brings together music, vocal performers, percussionists, choreography as well as hand gestures and facial expressions to express an idea. The themes usually centre around Hindu epics like Ramayana and Mahabharatha, folk mythologies and the Puranas. Traditionally performed by men, the art now has many women practitioners.

Artist-in-Residence with Lian Sutton (Silat)
UWCSEA East Drama Department hosted local actor and movement coordinator Lian Sutton to work with Grade 8 Middle school Drama students this week as our Artist-in-Residence in Term 3.
Lian conducted a workshop on Silat Tua - a traditional Malay martial art that utilises images from nature, animals, and archetypes to inspire and explore combative movements. Combining storytelling, reflexive action, and creative individuality, practitioners gain confidence and ownership over their own freestyle tari (dance).
Our students were excited and enthusiastic to transfer their drama knowledge of movement, action and reaction to the session. This opportunity is aligned with the College’s aspiration to bring those from different cultures together to build intercultural understanding.
In April and May, the Grade 9 and FIB Drama students had the chance to learn from Alys Hill, dance and specialist Performing Arts Teacher all the way from New Zealand. Alys taught them physical theatre techniques and the exercises allowed the students to understand how embodiment and movements can effectively convey a story.

Grade 11 Production
The IBDP Grade 11s put up wonderful performances on 22nd and 23rd March as they presented an Italian Commedia dell' Arte classic - A Servant to Two Masters by Carlo Goldoni and adapted by Lee Hall.
Inspired by contemporary theatre practitioner Elizabeth LeCompte, the students had re-contextualised their halves to ensure the key ideas are relevant to their intended audience.
Thank you for coming down to support our Grade 11 students as they put up their very own production. We hope you had a good laugh as you watched the comedy skillfully brought forth by the students.

Grade 12 Solo Performances
The final stage of IBDP Theatre took place in the drama studios at East campus with our Grade 12 Solo Performances. The HL students created, designed, directed and performed their very own piece of theatre inspired by a practitioner of their choice. The Drama Department is very proud of all the SL and HL students who have graduated in 2023 and so grateful for their time and love for the arts across middle school and high school. We will miss them. Needless to say the department is very proud of their success and learning.

Artist-in-Residence with Bill Bowers
UWCSEA East High School Drama Department has had the best time with another artist in residence on 16th-17th January in G9 & FIB Drama.
Bill Bowers from New York was trained by Marcel Marceau and is the most wonderful mime artist and drama educator. He's worked in all aspects of the performing arts in Film, Television and Theatre. His one man shows are stunning and raw reflections of universal human stories. Bill is most famous for his role and contribution in the original Lion King in New York.
Bill teaches the students the basic foundation work of manipulating energy leading to creating precise gesture work, movement and imagery. He scaffolds the learning with such ease and enables the students to slowly build their confidence in physicalising the essence of every day life movement.

"...we were really curious to see what it was like to work towards a production from a different angle so we wanted to see more of the directorial behind-the-scenes aspects to making a production."
Maya & Sophia (Directors of Lord of the Flies)
"...It taught me a lot about collaboration, communication, and also how to stay resilient. Also, as someone who doesn't take Drama in the IB or any Arts subject, it was really nice to bring that sort of element into my life, away from academics, and balance my life in that way."
Emma (Actor in Frankenstein)
The 2022 Student Theatre Festival was very successful with public shows back in full force! Helmed by the student directors - Tanuvi (Frankenstein), India (Death of a Salesman), Maya and Sophia (Lord of the Flies), Damini and Drishya (DNA), the cast and crew did an amazing job with stellar performances last November.

Interviews with Dunia, the community magazine of UWCSEA
In June 2022, our IB Theatre students Raniyah Basheer and Nimisha Iyer from the Class of 2022 did an interview for Dunia, the community magazine of UWCSEA. They talked about their memorable and transformative experiences doing 2 iterations of East Drama's Student Theatre Festival for the years 2020 and 2021. From first producing and directing a play in the Drama Studios to the Black Box, Raniyah and Nimisha have grown tremendously and we are extremely proud of them and their contributions to Drama@East.
The Student Theatre Festival is very special as it is completely student-run - from the directors to the cast and crew - and it is indeed a wonderful opportunity for all students at UWCSEA East to learn not only the different elements of production, but also to learn how to take charge and use performance as a platform to create change and speak about social or world issues that are close to their hearts.

Drama encourages, motivates and inspires individuals to understand themselves and the world around them.
Drama is an art form that uses the body, voice and space to tell stories from past, present, inner and outer worlds. It demands mental and physical energy through exploring and experimenting with creative ideas.
