Step 1  (Mind Map and 1st Interaction)

Now that you have unpacked the 6 prescribed essay titles in your class and have attended the TOK Essay Lunch, it is time to get set.

1. In order to come prepared for the initial meeting with your teacher, please complete the Mind Map for your chosen essay title; unless stated in the title, decide on two AOKs that you are strong in and would suit the essay title you wish to cover.  Once you have drafted some initial 'unpacking' notes, schedule your first meeting with your teacher.

2. After the first interaction, please complete the first  'comment box' on the Planning and Progress Form (PPF) on Managebac.

Your first interaction has to be Managebac by October 9th (TBC).

Step 3  (1st Draft Submission on Managebac and 3rd interaction)

1. Start writing your essay in the correct format:

• Write your essay in a Google Doc shared with your teacher. Do NOT copy and paste into your document, type everything in there! This is essential to check authenticity.

• do not include your name, name of our school or your candidate number anywhere  in your essay

• do not include cover page and content page 

• write out the prescribed essay title and its number - this is your essay title (please do not reword the original title)

• set your font to size 12 and stick with the classic fonts (Helvetica, Times New Roman, Arial, Cumbria, ... )

• use double line-spacing

• your doc's name should follow the format:  SURNAMEgivenname_TOK2025DRAFT      e.g. RUEDACamila_TOK2025DRAFT

• before you start writing your essay, ensure you have included Bibliography/Works Cited/References at the end and copied the list of all the sources you have collected and want to use.

• refer to this document for more guidance on writing of your essay and read a few more essays for inspiration

2. Once you have completed your draft

• scrutinise your essay using TOK ESSAY Checklist (document below)

• save it as a PDF  (SURNAMEgivenname_TOK2023DRAFT   e.g. RUEDACamila_TOK2023DRAFT)

• upload it to Managebac ('TOK Essay 1st DRAFT')

 Once you have receive the feedback for your draft, schedule your third meeting with your teacher.

2. After the third interaction, please complete the third  'comment box' on the Planning and Progress Form (PPF) on Managebac.

Your third interaction has to be Managebac by December 11th.

Step 4 (Final TOK ESSAY Submission)

1. Make a plan of what do you need to work on first  ... and only then start rewriting your essay on the same Google Doc you have shared with your teacher. Do NOT copy and paste into your document, type everything in there! This is essential to check authenticity.

• is it your argument you need to improve?

• is it the structure that needs your attention?

• do you need to look into the language (use of TOK terminology, use of AOK-specific terms, hedging language)?

• do you need to re-work your examples?

• are your analyses & evaluations focused on knowledge issues?

• does your formatting need improving?

• etc.

2. Once you have finished writing your essay, scrutinise your work using  the TOK ESSAY CHECKLIST (gdoc above)

3. Save your document as PDF and ensure it reads:  SURNAMEgivenname_TOK2025.pdf  (RUEDACamila_TOK2025.pdf)

4. Upload your essay to Managebac

5. Review & check your PPF on Managebac

6. Please indicate on the Worksheet TAB on Managebac you have completed all the above tasks.
