The Mathematics programme seeks to build on and develop student knowledge and skills learned in Primary School largely through an inquiry-based curriculum. The programme is designed to challenge students to think critically. It is also preparing them for the challenges ahead as they transition to High School. In Grade 6, students will focus on number sense, while developing a strong foundation moving into statistics and algebraic concepts. In Grade 7, students will further develop their conceptual understanding of these concepts as well as their critical thinking skills. In Grade 8, students will continue to develop concepts in linear algebra, statistics, number sense and geometry.
The Middle School mathematics programme focuses on building essential fundamental skills in algebra, geometry, statistics and number sense. Within our classrooms, our focus is on helping students achieve their objectives of enhancing mathematical learning and developing application skills through inquiry and our focus on conceptual understanding. Students work towards forming connections between concepts fostering a transferable knowledge base applicable to new and unfamiliar scenarios. Equally important is our commitment to fostering student advocacy and refining their approaches to learning (ATL), encompassing self-management, collaboration, and communication skills. These ATLs contribute to enhancing students' confidence in their mathematical abilities, leading to a positive impact on their overall learning. The development of skills such as time management, organisation, reflection, communicating with peers and their teacher, and active participation all play a pivotal role in this holistic approach.
Students are given every opportunity to extend their knowledge and are encouraged to challenge themselves through a variety of assessment tasks including unit tests, quizzes, exit tickets, online tasks, presentations, and in-class investigations. Students receive regular feedback from both formative and summative assessment tasks in order to monitor, reflect upon, and guide their learning. We strive to meet the needs of our diverse student population through a differentiated program of instruction and student agency. Students are offered the opportunity to challenge themselves at levels that match their readiness within each topic area of study with appropriate guidance from teachers.
