In Middle School, we are proud to offer a comprehensive Chinese curriculum that meets the diverse needs of our students. We offer three distinct courses: Chinese as a Foreign Language, Chinese as a Second Language, and Chinese as a First Language. Each course is designed to support students at different stages of their language learning journey, with a strong emphasis on communication, cultural understanding, and critical thinking.
Chinese as a Foreign Language
In this course, students get immersed in the fundamentals of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Lessons are rooted in real-life, practical subjects that reflect students' everyday lives — from talking about family and hobbies to shopping for food or exploring their neighbourhood. Through engaging exercises, games, and activities, students develop essential communication skills while having fun with the language.
Chinese as a Second Language
Students in this course continue to build on their existing language foundation, with an increasing focus on expressing themselves in more complex and nuanced ways. Emphasis is placed on communication in both spoken and written forms, allowing students to interact more deeply with the language and extend their linguistic range. When writing short stories, presenting, or debating, students learn the skills to become confident and effective communicators in Chinese.
Chinese as a First Language
This course is tailored for native speakers or students with a strong background in Chinese. It offers in-depth exploration of classical and modern Chinese literature, cultivating students’ ability to analyze texts, appreciate literary artistry, and develop their own aesthetic sensibilities. Critical thinking and literary discussion play a key role in the learning process.
We believe that language learning is inseparable from cultural understanding. Throughout all three courses, students engage in a variety of cultural activities and celebrations that bring the language to life. Additionally, our curriculum is rooted in concept-based teaching and learning, encouraging students to make connections, think critically, and apply their knowledge in new contexts.
In Chinese program, we design the assessments with the aim to improve teaching and learning, and to celebrate student achievement. Students have many opportunities to demonstrate their progress in a variety of ways, including class activities, creative projects, group work, and end-of-unit assessments. The assessments provide valuable information about students' strengths and areas for improvement. Meaningful, constructive feedback from teachers helps guide each learner on their language journey and encourages continual improvement.
