Outdoor education is a core part of the UWCSEA learning programme. The UWCSEA Junior School's Outdoor Education programme is designed to take the students into the unfamiliar and present them with age-appropriate challenges, which require them to assimilate and adapt. With their peers, they benefit from sharing the experience of developing new skills away from the comforts of home and family, often for the first time. The various activities and venues are thoroughly checked and reviewed to ensure student and staff safety before every trip. Our main aim for our expeditions is to set each student up for success.
As they progress through Grades 2 to 5, we place the students in varied situations, for increasing lengths of time. We give them opportunities for personal and social development that are impossible to replicate in a classroom. In these new environments, the students are challenged to reveal their willingness to take risks, to show compassion to others, to show initiative and enterprise; skill and care; teamwork and leadership.
In Grade 5, students spend four days at the Nomad Adventure Earth Camp in Gopeng, Malaysia. This expedition is very exciting for the students. Gopeng is located in the Kampar district and is surrounded by the majestic limestone hills with the Titiwangsa Mountains clearly visible in the distance. The expedition provides students a chance to extend their learning opportunities far beyond the classroom as students take on experiential challenges that build resilience, collaboration and leadership. It provides an avenue for them to explore the natural environment in a safe setting, learn from mistakes and develop perseverance. The camp is focused around adventure, enriched with team-building and team-bonding activities throughout. The experienced facilitators help guide our Grade 5 students through experiences they will never forget, ranging from tackling grade 1 rapids in a raft through to making the leap of faith at the Mountain School.
All our trips remain highlights in our student’s yearly reflections. They gain a wealth of experiences that they can use and develop throughout their lives. The Outdoor Education Programme is an integral part of their lives at UWCSEA.
