Understanding and exploring the issues that face our migrant worker and foreign domestic worker community
We want to focus on advocacy for the issue of human trafficking, but we also want to be able to create a longer-lasting impact. Possibly through contacting NGOs & Workers directly to understand the complexity of the issue as well as understand their requirements. At a larger scale, we wish to create a national or a local change that could possibly come out of the creation of a website. we need to more here+ does team statement go here or do we create another page?
Based on our initial research, those who get trafficked are from marginalised and poorer communities who get "lured" into the dream of high wages and luxurious lifestyles. But forget that the riches are only reserved for those at the top of the hierarchy.
Quality education is extremely relevant to this issue presented as a solution to prevent these people from falling into the traps that are placed by the traffickers and find higher-paying jobs. A quality education will ensure that less people are put into a situation where they have to face a trafficker.
Decent Work and Economic Growth is extremely relevant to this topic as it directly addresses the poor working conditions including their safety, low wages, etc that are faced by the migrant worker community in Singapore.
SDG 16-2: Protecting Children from Abuse, Exploitation, Trafficking and Violence. This part of SDG 16 is vital in addressing the issue of trafficking as it not only impacts adults but also children, leaving a long lasting scar on their childhood in many different ways.
Human Trafficking violates the social aspect of this method of looking at sustainability. According to Investopedia, many businesses should be considering factors such as "Is child labor going into your end product? Are people being paid fairly? Is the work environment safe?" In our project, we are aiming to to shed more light and advocate of the instances where these factors aren't looked upon.
The issue at hand connects to People, Prosperity, Peace, and Partnership in reference to the picture attached. The sustainability compass summarises UN's Sustainable Development Goals for instance, in terms of ending world poverty, etc.
Based on the descriptors of the various aspects of the Sustainability Compass, it is evident that the issue we are focussing on as a group connects to 3 aspects of the sustainability compass, the Economy, Society and, Well-being. It is important to have educated communities in order for larger sums of people to have greater access to higher-paying and better quality jobs which will, in turn, improve living standards, etc.
