Date: 25 May 2022
Two students won major awards at an event in Suffolk that celebrated the construction industry.
The learners – both studying at the Suffolk Rural campus of Suffolk New College (formally Otley College) – received their accolades at this year Suffolk Joint Consultative Committee (SJCC) annual dinner held at Trinity Park in Ipswich.
18 year old George Page who works for SEH French received the overall carpenter of the year prize.
George – who is studying a level two apprenticeship with Suffolk Rural, said: “Apprenticeships were frowned upon at school, but my dad was a carpenter and that encouraged me.”
“I wanted to do something practical and it’s been going really well. I think apprenticeships give you a good foundation to build on and if you have a trade under your belt, you will always get work.
“The college have been supportive and helpful and I was overwhelmed to win this. I think it will help me in the future to progress up the ranks,” added George who wants to work in a management role in the future.
His tutor, Greg Watson, said: “I’m really proud of George. He likes to do the small things well and that makes the big things easier. His commitment and passion is brilliant.”
His site manager is Shane Davis from SEH French. Shane said: “George’s attitude and skills are a real asset to our company.”
19 year old Zac Land from Needham Market was the runner up in this category. Zac – who works for Gipping Construction, said: “I wanted to get into work and learn a trade straight after school as you always have this experience behind you.
“I was surprised to get this acknowledgement. Whatever I do in the future I will always have this on my CV.”
Head of construction at Suffolk Rural is Mark Crisp. Mark said: “As a College we regularly pick up major accolades at this event. Anyone who is anyone who works in construction attends these awards so it’s great for our students and the College to get this recognition at such a prestigious event.”
Next up for Suffolk Rural and Suffolk New College will see students taking part in skills competitions against other Colleges at the much anticipated return of the 2022 Suffolk Show.

SHOWCASE OF APPRENTICES SKILLS AND TALENT
Suffolk New College's body and paint apprentices were given an opportunity to restore a Teardrop Caravan which had been at the Rural site, and was previously used by marketing. This was transported to the Ipswich body and paint workshop to be repaired and restored.
First the apprentices shared a big thought session with their Tutor Carl Smith to determine the work and vision for this Caravan, they chose a Suffolk theme in joint communication with the Marketing team so this could be showcased at future events that the college attend.
The apprentices, repaired the damage and proceeded to prime, sand and apply multiple designs onto the top coat, this was all done by free hand painting to demonstrate the great skills the apprentices have developed within their jobs roles and college training.
Carl Smith stated "this project enable the apprentices to stretch and challenge themselves, by working on a unique vehicle and to have a free style approach to show the gifts and talents that they have. This was a real team effort".
The newly restored vehicle has so far been showcased at Suffolk Show, and the recent college show case event. This has attracted attention at these events, as people have spent time identifying all of the Suffolk objects and places painted on to this Teardrop Caravan.
On the evening of 7th April 2022 Suffolk New College celebrated their Annual Apprenticeship Awards with employers, apprentices and their Assessors.
This event showcased the wealth of apprenticeship talent across a range of industries and specialisms. We are extremely proud of all our apprentices and delighted to have celebrated the success of our apprenticeship programmes with nominated winners from our apprenticeship team.
Each of our apprentices is vital to the national effort to recover from the pandemic, and build back better, by setting an example to further generations.
We look forward to celebrating again in 2023.
Alex has demonstrated excellent attendance and engagement with her Carpentry apprenticeship and has always shown a true interest and passion for Carpentry. Alex has a great attitude to work and is always practicing the small details to ensure the overall task is completed to a high standard. This attention to detail really sets her apart. Alex’s employer and subcontractor are very pleased with her progress and will be supporting her through her Advanced Carpentry apprenticeship, once she has achieved her Level 2 End Point Assessment.
Jamie’s has shown high levels of commitment throughout his Heavy Goods Vehicle apprenticeship. He recently passed his EPA knowledge test first time and scored a fantastic 94%. He has excellent practical skills and performance that he demonstrates both at college and in the workplace and has a great attitude and problem solving skills. The biggest testament to him is that his employer has used his image on the rear door of their welfare unit vehicle.
