Elementary School Counseling

The role of a school counselor is to provide culturally competent services to students, parents/guardians, school staff, and the community through school guidance curriculum, individual student planning, preventative and responsive services and system support. Elementary school counselors provide students with a comprehensive, developmental school counseling program that is based on district and Wisconsin state standards and the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) national model.

School Counselors support and advocate for all students in their academic, career, and social/emotional development through:

- Classroom guidance lessons

- Small group counseling sessions

- Brief individual counseling

- Consultation with parents/family members and teachers

- Collaboration and consultation with other community resources

Confidentiality Guidelines

"Professional school counselors recognize their primary obligation for confidentiality is to the student but balance that obligation with an understanding of the legal and inherent rights of parents/guardians to be the guiding voice in their children's lives"

(American School Counselor Association, 2008, p.1).

Your confidentiality is important to me! In our School Counseling Office, what is said in here, stays in here, with the following exceptions, as required by law and/or ethical standards:

1. Harm to self or others

2. Abuse or neglect

3. Court or other legal proceedings

If there is ever a need to reveal information, I will let you know in advance, and work with you to handle the situation in a way that respects you, your feelings, and your needs.
