Children’s books are an invaluable source of information and values. They reflect attitudes in our society about diversity, power relationships among groups of people, as well as various social identities. The messages that young children absorb from books heavily influence their ideas about themselves and others. Children’s books teach them about who is important, who matters, and who is even visible. Many families choose to offer their young children a range of books about people like them and their family-as well as about people who are different from them and their family. With this in mind, teacher Amanda Jessup has compiled an extensive booklist of anti-bias children’s books that offer multiple perspectives. You can choose to use this as a resource to supplement or even replace some of the readings delivered through K12. Your teacher would be happy to help you figure out how to incorporate books from this list into your student's lesson plan.
