Our initial focus will be on the development of a multi-objective optimization model to determine slot allocation decisions under the IATA guidelines (Task 1). The model must be able to handle the typical operational and regulatory constraints of an airport, such as runway, terminal and apron capacities and noise restrictions, as well as the priority rules among slot requests.

For solving the optimization model, we will use both exact and approximate methods, including meta-heuristic algorithms (Task 2). The first type of method guarantees an optimal solution, but might require impracticable computational times as the instance size increases. It is therefore unlikely that exact methods can be used to handle the larger airports worldwide. The approximate methods are faster, but do not guarantee that solutions are optimal. Through extensive algorithm developments and computational experiments, we expect to show that some of these methods can nonetheless result in near-optimal outcomes.

Our next activity will consist on a qualitative study to gather insights from major airport stakeholders on their needs regarding slot allocation, as well as on their assessment of the current IATA process, in order to identify its strengths, shortcomings and opportunities for improvement (Task 4).

The final year of the project will be essentially devoted to assess the impacts of potential changes to the current IATA guidelines on flight schedules and airport operations (Task 5), using the optimization model and solution methods developed in Tasks 1 and 2, and taking into consideration the results of the qualitative study carried out in Task 4. The conclusions of this assessment will allow us to provide sound recommendations regarding the evolution of IATA slot allocation guidelines.
