In this section, you will find your self-tape instructions, along with instructions and options for your monologue and song* selection!

Self-Tape Instructions

Preparation

Please find a quiet environment where you are able to perform without interruptions
Place your phone / laptop / digital camera so you are visible in the frame from waist-up

Test your video and audio quality before proceeding. We want to be able to see and hear you clearly!

Find the point slightly away from the camera you will be looking when performing your monologue and song

please only look directly into the camera during your introduction

Breathe, and get ready to make some acting choices!

Filming your Self-Tape

The Self-Tape video you submit will include each of the following components, in this order:

Slate*
One Memorized Monologue
One Prepared Song (OPTIONAL)

*A Slate is is your introduction, in which you will state the following into the camera:

1) your First and Last name, 2) year in school, 3) 1st choice character (can say "No Preference"), 4) which monologue you will be performing, 5) and which song you will sing (if applicable).

NOTE: You can also record your monologue and song separately, but please edit the videos into a singular file before you submit.

Monologues

Please look over the monologue suggestions below and choose ONE to memorize and perform. You may choose whichever monologue you want, regardless of gender!

NOTE: If you have a monologue you would like to perform that isn't listed below, please go ahead and perform it! There will be a space to tell us the name of the monologue on your Audition Form. If you choose to do so, we ask that you please keep this monologue to under 1-minute in length.

What we are looking for:

Can you speak loudly and clearly?
Can you connect with and embody a character?
Can you memorize a piece of text?
Can you make choices and commit to them?
Are you willing to take risks?

Tips and Information!

Do NOT use an accent or dialect. Trust your own voice!
Make the words your own! You can watch the original scenes the monologues have been extracted from to get inspired, but don't just copy the choices of the original actors!
Emphasize important words, pause and take breaths when you feel like it.
Don't be afraid to use your body!
Forget about the camera and instead, imagine the world of the story around you!

No more bumping into random men in our kitchen during the middle of the night. No more sleazy smells from all the booze and drugs you’ve been doing. No more waiting for a smile, a look, something, anything that tells me you see me.

You never cared about me. You selfish, waste of life, you only cared about me if it served you well in some way. Whenever I’m no use to you, I disappear from your mind.

And now I’ve disappeared for good. You can keep your life. I want no part of it.

If you just opened this like I told you to, tie yourself down to whatever chair you’re sitting in, because this email is going to be a rough fucking ride.

For those of you that have your heads stuck under rocks, which apparently is the majority of this chapter, we have been FUCKING UP in terms of night time events and general social interactions with Sigma Nu. I’ve been getting texts on texts about people LITERALLY being so fucking AWKWARD and so fucking BORING. If you’re reading this right now and saying to yourself “But oh em gee Julia, I’ve been having so much fun with my sisters this week!”, then punch yourself in the face right now so that I don’t have to fucking find you on campus to do it myself.

Song Selection

In addition to the monologue, you may send in a song sample of at least 1 verse and 1 chorus OR at least 1 minute (ONLY when the song does not have a set verse/chorus structure).

REMINDER: ALL roles are required to sing to be considered.

Below you'll find a curated playlist of musical songs in different vocal ranges. You may choose from this playlist, OR you may choose a musical theatre/movie song of your liking.

Please only choose ONE song for your self-tape, ACAPELLA (vocals only, without instruments or musical accompaniment)
