A lack of quality soil contamination data and accessible soil testing is a fundamental challenge for many communities. Testing is an essential first step to accurately defining the extent of contamination from legacy and contemporary sources.
To address this need, the Collaborative holds pop-up community testing events in LA County to offer access to reliable soil testing methods and soil resources. At these events, we use handheld XRF devices to provide real-time data on soil quality. Community members are invited to bring soil samples for testing and receive a consultation about their results from soil experts. Soil samples are tested on site, and the results are immediately shared with participants alongside printed resources to help them better understand soil contamination and strategies to reduce risk. We assume that if accessible testing in collaboration with a trusted source is made available to communities, this will generate the necessary information for communities to take action to improve soil conditions. The long-term aims of this initiative are to identify potential barriers to scaling up a regional community soil testing program, learn more about community testing priorities, and generate a soil quality map that communities can use to stay informed and advocate for better solutions.
