The LA Urban Soil Social Impact Collaborative is a community-university partnership that aims to leverage university research and resources, and apply local and Indigenous knowledge to advance equitable access to healthy soils.
Our Focus
Our Focus
Our work aims to implement a comprehensive and co-produced model for clean soils in Los Angeles through community soil testing and education, clean soil resources and bioremediation, and policy change. Our long-term goals are to improve equitable access to healthy soils and services that support climate-resilient futures, co-power partners to adopt evidence-based soil strategies, and train the future generation of scientists in community-engaged co-produced science.

Soil Testing
Soil Testing
We test soil samples using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analyzers to determine soil characteristics and potential contaminants. We share this information with community residents along with guidance and resources to manage their soil.
Soil Banking & Bioremediation
Soil Banking & Bioremediation
We advocate for soil banking models and bioremediation strategies. Soil banks keep clean fill excavated from development sites in the city. When mixed with compost, it can be used to amend soils. Nature-based remediation options use native plants and fungal communities to address contamination.

We conduct policy analyses to better ensure scalability and the potential for long-term transformational change. We aim to share strategies with broader audiences to promote healthy soils systems through policy, regulation and risk management.
