Welcome

Dear Friends,

Welcome to the 2023 Diverse Intelligences Summit! If you’re joining us for the first time, we’re thrilled that you’ve decided to spend these summer days with us. If you’ve participated in the Summit from the very beginning, we are likewise thrilled that you’ve found in this community the same brilliance and stimulation that we have. We hope all of you feel at home and among friends!

This Summit comes at a pivotal moment for the DI community. Much has occurred since the first Summit in 2018. New collaborations have sparked novel ideas and forged powerful Frameworks for thinking about the intelligences that share our planet and shape our future. But much remains to be done. We hope you share our conviction that the ideas, aspirations, and visions of the Diverse Intelligences community are critical to meet this moment, when questions about natural and artificial intelligences seem to preoccupy ever more human minds.

We had two major goals in organizing the 2023 Summit. First, we wanted to create a space for robust conversations about your work. To do so, we’ve anchored the schedule around substantial talks, giving everyone the chance to share their work at greater depth than previous Summits. We’ve also complemented the talks with discussion panels, putting your scholarship into conversations that cross disciplinary lines and look beyond the academy toward impact. Second, we wanted to think together about the future of the DI community. Indeed, the group assembled for the 2023 Summit is a product of such community input; many of you

nominated the new folks who are joining us this year, alongside a cohort of alumni of the 2023 Diverse Intelligences Summer Institute. Through working groups, panel discussions, and many conversations, we hope you’ll work together to envision the ways that the DI community can grow, change, and connect to other vital partners.

As with earlier Summits, some of the most important time falls outside the rhythm of structured events, with coffee breaks, meals, and other informal time providing ample opportunity for you to build trust, collaboration, and community. Of course, there will also be a cèilidh—a time to dance, be merry, and be grateful for our community.

On this site, you’ll find a map of the venue, schedule, and list of participants. There will also be a staffed registration desk open throughout the event. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to us if you have any questions, comments, or concerns. We hope you enjoy the DI Summit and we look forward to four days of intellectual fireworks and collective effervescence!

On behalf of the Summit organizing team, welcome to St Andrews!
