FAQs for ALL STUDENTS
I haven't studied French in years and I'm rusty. Can I enroll in a lower level than my Placement Exam result?
Short answer: Sorry, no.
Longer answer: Per SU's Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics policy, students may not earn credit for a course that repeats prior study. But fear not! We can reassure you that:
You likely have greater aptitude than you think you do.
Living in Strasbourg is like being in a 24/7 language lab, so it's common to progress very quickly.
In Strasbourg, there will be an individual assessment to make sure you're in the appropriate language level.
By the same token, if you have AP or other transfer credit for a specific level of French, you may not take that level without forfeiting the credit. You should register for the next level of French in Strasbourg.
I've submitted my Student Advising Form but, after talking to my advisor, I've changed my mind about a course or two. What should I do?
If you and/or your advisor(s) have any changes to the courses you originally pre-selected, it's not a problem. Simply edit the PDF of your form in Adobe Acrobat or the software of your choice... or you can kick it old school: hand-write the new course selection(s) on a hard copy — without obscuring your original course selections, please! — before you scan and upload it.
When you upload your revised form to Student Advising Form (with Advisor's Signature), you will find a dropdown menu (see screenshot below). From this menu, choose "Changes have been made to my course selections on my Student Advising Form." This will alert our office to record your changes as we assess demand for each course.

When you ask me to seek advising after I submit my Student Advising Form (SAF), do you mean an advisor at my home school? Or should I contact someone at Syracuse University?
We're referring to an advisor at your home college or university. Visiting students may want to first ask their study abroad office who should sign. At some institutions, it's your study abroad advisor; at others, it's an academic advisor who is familiar with the requirements of your degree program. (You may even need to consult with more than one advisor, if different people advise you about your major and minor or dual degrees, for instance). When you submit your SAF, the system generates a PDF that you can share with your advisor(s).
There is space on the form by each course selection for an advisor to initial if it's approved and indicate how the course counts toward your degree (major course, elective, counts toward minor, etc.). After you upload it to Orange Abroad, the signed SAF is your proof of advising.
We note that some schools do not pre-approve courses as a matter of course. If this applies to you, understand that you will still need to submit your SAF. We also ask you to upload it, adding a comment to the effect that your school does not pre-approve courses.
I already completed a study abroad approval form for my home school. Why should I also complete and upload the SAF?
We require all students to complete the online SAF form so we can gather data on course preferences. This helps our Strasbourg colleagues plan for the coming semester and ensure that we have enough course sections to meet demand. But we're aware that many of our partner institutions have study abroad course approval forms that may duplicate some or all information on Syracuse's SAF.
If your home school requires a different form — and it indicates how your approved courses count in your degree program — please upload that form to OrangeAbroad > Student Advising Form (with Advisor’s Signature) together with a PFD of your submitted SAF. Please don't skip the uploading step. Knowing how courses count in your degree program (major or minor requirement, elective, etc.) lets us help you find alternatives if a course is full or cancelled.
Do I have to take the French Placement Test?
No, visiting students should not take Syracuse's French placement exam.
If you are unsure of your language level, you may obtain French course syllabi from your Syracuse Abroad program advisor, then consult with your home school's language department to see which course is best for you. When you arrive in Strasbourg, the faculty will assess and confirm your language level. You can rest assured that you'll be placed in an appropriate class.
How will I receive my transcript for this semester?
Your home school needs an official transcript from Syracuse University in order to award credit for your semester on our program.
Transcripts are not issued automatically. Submit a request to the Syracuse University Registrar’s office once you have confirmed that your grades are posted and you have no financial holds.
IMPORTANT! Syracuse Abroad provides one transcript at no charge for all visiting students. Your free transcript is redeemable for one year from the end of your program. (E-transcripts are delivered free of charge. All mailed transcripts are subject to a mailing fee.)
