VISITING STUDENTS: Visiting students do not take SU's placement exam. To select the appropriate language level, request French course syllabi by emailing syrstrasbourg@syr.edu and then consult with an advisor in the languages department of your home school.
MATRICULATED SYRACUSE STUDENTS -- including native and heritage speakers of French and students with French AP, IB, or other college-level or transfer credit -- must take the online French placement survey/exam, accessed through MySlice/Blackboard, before submitting your SAF.
SU students should not take the placement exam if:
you have already taken one or more FRE classes at Syracuse, in which case you should take the next course in sequence
you have already taken SU’s French online placement exam, in which case you should take the course level in which you were placed
Foreign language placement instructions are in Answers (remember to log in for best info).
To access the exam, log into MySlice: Advising > Placement Exams > Take Placement Exams
The purpose of the online placement exam is to identify your language level and allow you to select the appropriate course on your SAF. Even if you've never taken French, you must complete this exam!
ALL STUDENTS' language level will also be confirmed with an assessment in Strasbourg.
ALL Students at Beginning (100) or Intermediate (200) levels:
If you are at one of these levels, you take a 4-credit language instruction course: FRE 101,102, 201, or 202.
ALL Students at an Advanced level (300 or 400):
If you have already completed four semesters of college-level French (or are at that level of proficiency), choose one or more of the following 3-credit courses:
FRE 300.1 - French Cinema vs. Hollywood
FRE 300.2 - French for Diplomacy
Admitted to a partner university program at the Université de Strasbourg? You can fulfill your language requirement by taking French language instruction OR content courses taught in French (EX: political science, history, math, French literature, etc.) at the local university.
