All students must take at least one Spanish language/grammar course (SPA 101, 102, 201, 202, 302, or 428) while in Madrid. Students who place beyond SPA 428 take one or more non-grammar courses taught in Spanish (SPA 364/HOA 464, SPA 400.2, SPA/HST/WGS 417). Any student who meets the relevant prerequisite may also take these "Spanish content" courses (see the Schedule of Classes for prerequisites).
To see which course(s) you should register for, consult the table below. SU students who have taken Spanish, you should take the next Spanish course in sequence. If you are an SU student who has NOT taken Spanish, take the online placement exam to learn your level:
MySlice > Student Home > "Advising" Tile > Placement Exams > Take Placement Exams.
Please also see Spanish course descriptions on our website for more info.
* May include native or heritage speakers.
If you are unsure of your language level, request Spanish course syllabi from your Madrid Program Advisor or Jeanne Chu, and review them with your home school's Spanish language department. Your language level will be confirmed by faculty in Madrid.
After you know your Spanish level, please consult the table above to help you choose your Spanish course(s). You can then review special information for Visiting Students.
You're good to go! Select the next Spanish course in sequence. You may also register for any optional Spanish course for which you're qualified. See the table above.
If you're a Syracuse student with no SU Spanish class on your transcript, you must have a placement survey/exam score on record before submitting your Student Advising Form. This includes beginners, native and heritage speakers of Spanish—AND students with AP, IB, or other college-level or transfer Spanish credit. (YES, even beginners! To receive your SPA 101 placement, you must complete the survey/exam. It requires no study and takes only a few minutes.)
If you have taken the exam in a past semester, no need to re-take it.
You can view your score at MySlice > Student Home > "Advising" Tile > Placement Exams > Placement Exam Scores. You should register according to the level displayed (e.g., choose SPA 302 if your score is SPA 300).
If MySlice does not show a Spanish exam score for you, take the exam now by navigating to MySlice > Student Home > "Advising" Tile > Placement Exams > Take Placement Exams. Illustrated instructions are available online.
IMPORTANT! The survey/exam was written for first-year university students. When asked how many years you studied Spanish in high school, respond with your total years of Spanish study, whether in high school, at a previous college, or both.
Note that MySlice will not allow you to register for a lower level than your placement exam score.
