Chickens handle cold temperatures well, but they cannot go without water, even in freezing conditions. Dehydration can happen quickly in winter and can lead to serious health issues.
Freezing Weather Instructions:
As the main water valve to the farm will be turned off by RISD to avoid freezing, you will need to bring fresh water from home to refill the bowl. You may also bring a jug of hot water to help melt ice in the other waterers. Access to water is essential for the chickens.
NHE staff will prep the coop for freezing temperatures. This includes adding additional bedding to their nesting boxes and adding a tarp to the coop.
If it is over 100 degrees, it would be best to change their water 2 times each day. If their water is too hot, they won’t drink it. Heat takes a toll on chicks. When it is super hot (over 100), bring ice to fill containers. Another idea is to freeze grapes, strawberries, etc, and give them frozen treats when it is hot. It is also good to hose down the floor of their coop to cool off the ground temp and give them some mud to cool themselves in. You can even gently mist them to cool them off.
The coop also has misters. These will likely already be turned on in the event of extreme heat.
