The War of The Triple Alliance was declared on May 1, 1865. Fought between Paraguay and the allied countries of Argentina, Brazil, and Uruguay. The cause of this war was Paraguay being involved in boundary and tariff disputes with its more powerful neighbors, Argentina and Brazil, for years. The effect of the war was Argentina and Brazil annexing about 55,000 square miles (140,000 square km) of Paraguayan territory. Brazil enlarged its Mato Grosso province from annexed territory. Both Argentina and Brazil demanded a large indemnity (which was never paid) and occupied Paraguay until 1876.

Brazil was colonized by Portugal and this led to conflicts between Portuguese colonizers and Brazilian natives. These conflicts forces driving people apart are still ongoing today. In an effort to preserve Indigenous people and their traditions, the 1988 Brazilian constitution recognized the rights of Indigenous people to their ancestral territories and took on the responsibility of demarcating and protecting Indigenous territories. Under President Jair Bolsonaro, an overall unwillingness to demarcate Indigenous territories have exposed entire Indigenous communities to attacks by outsiders. These attacks are mostly motivated by the pursuit of the natural riches located within the territories of Indigenous villages. These examples show the ongoing centrifugal force of the Portuguese settlers and Indigenous people of Brazil.
