Parents, I will try to update this with the questions you send in...
Do I need to fill out an application for Westwood?
Not if you live in the Westwood attendance area (aka- your home school is Spring Creek). If your home school is another school and you feed into another junior high, you WILL need to fill out a magnet application BEFORE 12/1.
How many electives does my child get?
In 7th grade, your child will get 3 FY (full year) electives. SEM (semester) courses are 1/2 year, so they will be able to select a cluster of 2 SEM classes for 1 FY class.
Each 7th grader should take PE or Athletics as one of their electives. That leaves 2 electives left for whatever they are interested in.
What's the difference between PE and athletics?
Athletics are for students interested in playing team sports (basketball, track, volleyball, football, etc) and PE is for students who just need the credit (or are interested in doing tennis/soccer after school).
**Physicals are required for Athletics. Use the following form with your pediatrician or attend the clinic in May when info is shared. Please see email from Ms. Bradshaw for more information.
How many years do students have to take PE/Athletics in junior high?
1, so they get it over with in 7th grade.
Are there any other options for PE?
Yes. They have the option of doing off-campus PE (which requires 10 practice hours during the week of an Olympic type sport during the week) or summer school PE. Read more info here: https://web.risd.org/healthpe/offcampus
Athletics is also offered on campus during the year. If students would like to participate in team sports, they will need a physical (see below) and to sign up for athletics.
What's the difference between GT and PreAP?
6th graders will take the Cogat test this year. GT placements are made based on the scores of these tests and cumulative data from the classroom. If a student qualifies for a GT class, they should take it! It means they are gifted in that area, and we want them to be challenged/have a class that is taught the way their brain works.
Can my child take the Algebra I test?
The application/info for the Algebra will be posted when I get more information. :)
What if my child is in MTA/ Take Flight?
MTA is offered in junior high and will take up one of their electives. Just note MTA at the top of their course card, and I will sign them up for the course during registration.
Please email me if your question isn't on here. I will be happy to answer and add it. :)
