Important Second Grade Standards

Hello Panthers!

Below are some important learning targets to help you reach your learning potential. We know you can do - we believe in you!

Reading:

Keep the reading going! It is important to read 20 minutes everyday. This can be done in so many fun way. Find a favorite spot outside, read to your favorite stuffie, have a loved one read to you, or read a book online! Be creative and have fun. After you read, make sure you are re-telling the key events that happened. Make sure the events are in order (beginning, middle, and end), use the character's names and tell us the setting. Make sure you give enough information, but don't give the whole story away!! This is a balancing act, but with practice you will be re-telling masters! Use the Summer Reading workbook to keep track of your reading.

Writing:

To keep your writing skills looking good, keep a summer journal! This could be in a spiral notebook or use plain paper stapled together. Each day or so - write an entry. With each entry, make sure you are using descriptive language painting a picture in your reader's mind. Make sure your story makes sense (so re-read it many times out loud). Also make sure you are using punctuation! Make sure each entry is a small moment! We challenge you to read your entries to a family member and see what they think! Remember, great writers always go back and edit and add to their stories!

Math:

Don't forget about the numbers! To keep you sharp as a tack, practice adding and subtracting 3 digit numbers using an appropriate strategy. It's not about getting the correct answer, but more about SHOWING YOUR WORK! I know you are probably tired of hearing this from your teachers, but it's true. Showing your work is MORE important to us than a correct answer. Such a difference from when your parents learned math. In your bag, there was a Summer Math workbook. There are a lot of problems to help you keep your math learning going and even challenge you with a couple of new 3rd grade problems. Keep your eyes open and see if you can spot them :) You can also work on your basic math facts by using flashcards. Having a strong foundation with your basic addition and subtraction facts are essential for your understanding of 3rd grade math concepts. Also, keep working on Dreambox. Dreambox is a great tool to help you keep your learning going in a fun game-based program.
