"Doing health and social care at QE was a great experience for me as it helped me to learn and develop vital skills such as communication, organisation, researching and working in a group. These skills will be useful to any further study or job, but especially for those related to either teaching, nursing, or youth worker. I was very happy with the wide variety of topics we studied as we studied areas such as psychology, anatomy, communication and additional needs. While there is a fair amount of work to do, all the teachers are great at explaining it clearly and supporting you through any problems. I enjoyed my health and social care lessons as there was a friendly, relaxed environment but we were still productive and hard-working. I fully recommend the subject to anyone who is considering it!"
Katherine Clements, 2nd year Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma in Health and Social Care
"Choosing health and social was such a good decision. The variety of the units was not what I expected. You learn things from, helping the vulnerable, to each part of the body therefore you’re developing a wide range of knowledge and using your skills in different ways. I’m going to study to be a Operating Department Practitioner at university and health and social is easily the biggest and most helpful subject I chose at college due to it being so broad and of course having biology! It equips you with more than you could imagine and was extremely valuable and useful. I am now looking forward to building on the knowledge I have learned and also applying the skills when dealing patients, their relatives and my colleagues."
Rae Thompson, 2nd year Cambridge Technical Diploma in Health and Social Care.
"Personally, I would 100% recommend studying Health and Social Care as a subject. The lessons involve some group tasks and computer work so you are required to maintain a sense of self discipline to be able to complete all your coursework on time. However at the same time, there is always a friendly atmosphere in the classroom with plenty of support from teachers and peers. The teachers always make sure you have the correct knowledge and resources to be able to complete your work. The units are highly interesting and can link to other subjects such as psychology and sociology. Finally, for those who are considering going into a Health and Social based career, this subject will provide you with some fundamental key values going into the future. "
Megan Chilton, 2nd year Cambridge Technical Diploma in Health and Social Care.
“I thoroughly enjoyed studying health and social care for 2 years at QE. The support I received was fantastic and I was always given help and guidance when needed. I chose health and social care as I’m looking forward to studying 'Early years and childhood development' at University which I hope will then lead me to a career in teaching. Health and social has been a massive benefit to me as I’ve studied units such as Dealing with Challenging Behaviour. This specific unit was beneficial for me as I may have to deal with individuals who need extra support within teaching. I also studied a unit which covered areas like Children with Special Educational Needs and how I can create different strategies to help promote their learning.”
Olivia Job, 2nd year Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma in Health and Social Care
“Studying health and social care gave me a huge insight into all the different aspects of what it’s really like to have a career in health and social care! I learned a variety of new things that are hugely important within the sector, including how to maintain effective communication, how to ensure the safety of all service users and how to safeguard them effectively. Also, how different types of people need different levels of care and so much more in order to meet their individual needs and treat them fairly. I enjoyed every unit because it was new and interesting information. The teachers give you all the support you need inside and outside of lesson time, as well as giving you the freedom to do your own research to add more depth to your work to gain a better understanding. Overall, my experience doing health and social care was amazing and I’m so much more knowledgeable about the industry, and feel much more confident about progressing into a healthcare career. I am looking forward to starting my course next year in something I knew little about before QE”

"HSC first taught me about the different health and social care professions and introduced me to the idea of nursing and caring for others as a career, which led to me becoming a nurse myself. It also taught me how to balance my work priorities, and developed my organisational skills, which I have carried through both my undergraduate degree and into my nursing career. Nursing is such a rewarding and challenging profession. You deal with such a wide variety of cases from comforting people at possibly the worst times of their lives to helping those with life threatening injuries and their families too"
Imarni Gillham, nurse at James Cook University Hospital
"I enjoyed studying health and social care at QE. I enjoyed the fact we covered lots of different aspects of the subject to have more of an insight into the wide range of areas within Health and Social Care. My teachers were approachable and gave me the support I needed, they would make sure that I could always ask any questions I wanted to."
