An area of interest for many geographers, we save this unit to begin our second year! With all hazards, we want to understand how they work, the effects they may have, as well as how people may seek to manage them. The hazards that we focus on are:
Tectonic or geomorphic hazards - Volcanic Eruptions and Earthquakes
Climatic hazards - Tropical Storms (eg hurricanes) and Wildfires
As well as this we study locations that are subject to multiple hazards and examine how the perceptions and resilience of the inhabitants in those locations allows for the continued human occupation of those places.
As in Year 1, in all units, we use a series of workbooks produced by your teachers at QE as the main framework for learning. Feel free to have a browse through the first one, which we've posted for all of our units.
Water and Carbon underpin life on earth. The water cycle is likely to be familiar to you but the carbon cycle slightly less so. The unit builds on some knowledge of physical geography systems from your Coasts work in Year 1. We study their importance, with a particular emphasis on:
How the two different cycles operate as natural systems
Factors, processes and changes within the water and carbon cycles
Water and carbon stores on our planet and the significance of human activity
This is all illustrated by a case study of the Amazon rainforest.
Both of these units are delivered in the Autumn Term, with a delayed start for the Water and Carbon Cycles unit to enable the completion of the coursework investigation to take place.
This unit is divided into Global Systems, taught by one member of staff, and Global Governance, taught by your second teacher.
Global systems helps you learn about the process of globalisation, world trade, the role of trading blocs and the significance of TNCs (trans-national corporations). Case studies are included.
Global governance looks at the various international organisations that regulate our planet and studies a global common - Antarctica.
Teaching of the course is organised in such a way as to allow time for revision and increased practice of exam technique as you approach your final exams. Exam questions form part of your assessed work right from the start of the course and you will be given a series of assessment booklets produced in-house to use.
Work on your 4,000 word report takes place during the Autumn Term and although we allocate some teaching time to support you with this, much will be done independently. The coursework is normally handed in shortly after the Christmas Holidays in your second year. For more information, have a look at the Fieldwork & Coursework page.
