This page is a taster activity that we offer to students from some schools, in the classroom at QE. However, you can still take part, by exploring the resources below.
This activity is based on the Human Geography units of Changing Places, Contemporary Urban Environments and Global Systems and Global Governance in the A Level course.
We're going to consider what makes a great place, within a town or city. We'll be looking at some case studies of how this is being done globally, with the help of international NGOs like the United Nations.
First, let's watch a video to start to think about how much urban areas can be made into great places.
It's produced by Bupa - do you know what sort of a company they are, what their interest is in? Does that explain their focus on a certain type of sustainability here?
Next, explore what makes towns and cities great. Launch the map and click on the pins to find out about what's going on in cities worldwide, increasing their sustainability and liveability for their residents.
Notice how some of the schemes relate to social, economic and political sustainability, as well as environmental.
Now, do some thinking.
Imagine that you are in charge of running a city.
What would be the top five things you would want to make happen, so that your city was a really great place to live in - or really sustainable for its inhabitants? Could you list your ideas in order of importance? And can you explain and justify the importance of your points?

This is a real activity - it's one of the lessons we teach, as part of the Contemporary Urban Environments topic, during Year 1. It also has lots of relevance to the Changing Places topic.
