Super Smash Bros. Rules/Guidelines

1.0 General

Welcome to MVUSD Esports League, and thank you for your participation. To ensure our events are as fun, fair, and competitive as possible, please be sure to read these rules in their entirety and to revisit them before the events, as they are subject to revision. A few points of emphasis this season are as follows:

  • Students must be enrolled in a MVUSD middle or high school and be on the roster that was turned in by their school’s esports team or club advisor.

  • Downloadable content (DLC) characters are not allowed in tournaments.

  • Amiibo’s are not allowed.

1.1 Eligibility

  • Participants must be enrolled in a MVUSD middle or high school.

  • Coaches/Advisors must submit a roster of eligible students for competition.

  • Participants must have a minimum 2.0 GPA or meet school GPA requirements and agree to and sign the MVUSD Parent/Student Agreement.

1.2 Materials

  • Players must use district issued Nintendo Pro Controllers and joy-cons.

  • Students may change the controls to their liking prior to their match, but must reset them to defaults at the conclusion of their match.

  • DLC is not allowed for our tournaments at this time.

1.3 Player Rosters and Registration

  • Coaches must submit final rosters to the Esports Coordinator no later than 7 days prior to the tournament.

2.0 Tournament Play

2.1 Tournament Format

  • Single or double elimination 1v1 Head to Head best of 5 format. Check event details for specifics (our 12/15/21 tourney is Single elimination).

    • Double elimination:

  • Once a participant/team loses a round, that participant/team will compete in the redemption bracket.

  • Participants that lose in the redemption bracket are eliminated from that tournament.

  • Head to Head (1v1), Best of 5

1) Team A Player 1 plays Team B Player 1, then each team's Player 2 battles, and so on.

2) After 5 battles, the team with the most wins moves on in the tourney

3) Even if Team A wins the first three, thereby securing match victory, we want the third and fourth battle to occur. This gives each kid a chance to have an individual experience. Besides, maybe Team B is getting trounced 4-0. That fifth match suddenly becomes important (nobody wants to get skunked).

4) This method makes the awarding of team prizes authentic. Each member of the winning team had the chance to contribute in some way.

  • Players may change characters at the beginning of a match.

  • Because tournament brackets may be uneven, byes will be implemented at random, unless otherwise dictated by the specific rules of the tournament. This means a team may be selected to skip round one and begin in round 2.

  • Players are not locked into the same character throughout the tournament.

  • You may not play on a stage that is not on the available stages list. This will result in a double disqualification (stage selection should be set to random and only legal stages active)

  • If a game ends with a self-destruct move, the results screen will determine the winner.

  • Sudden Death with tied percentage/stock will result in a 1 stock/2 minutes playoff match, otherwise lowest percentage wins.

2.3 Legal Stages and Stage Selection

Stage selection should be set to random with only the following legal stages available.

The legal stages are as follows:

Starting stages

  • Battlefield

  • Final Destination

  • Town & City

  • Pokemon Stadium 2

  • Smashville

  • Lylat Cruise

2.4 Tournament Pacing

  • All competition except the finals must be completed before the scheduled finals.

  • Round 1 should begin within 5 minutes of the tournament start time. Failure to do so will result in a forfeit for the player/team who is not present or able to play.

3.0 Reporting Results

  • Participants should play as soon as possible after their bracket populates.

  • Winning coaches should report results to the bracket master immediately after the conclusion of the match.

  • Winners are encouraged to take a picture or screenshot of their match results in case the reported results are challenged. Without such proof, contested results may have to be vacated and both participants may have to forfeit.

  • Contests of reported results must be made before the next round is completed.

4.0 Finals

These rules are subject to change

  • These rules may be refined before the tournament based upon feedback and the workability of the described tournament format.

  • Rule changes, if any, will be updated on this document ASAP.
