Prof. Dr. Kirsten Møllegaard
Keynote Speaker
Prof. Dr. Kirsten Møllegaard is the department chair and professor of English at University of Hawai`i at Hilo. She teaches courses on literature, film, myth and folklore, comics and graphic novels, gender and women’s studies, and rhetoric.
Her research interests focus on the dynamics of people, places, and stories past and present. She is the co-editor of Narratives of Place in Literature and Film (Routledge, 2019). Her research articles and book reviews appear in International Journal of Comic Art, Journal of American Culture, Journal of Popular Culture, Folklore, Supernatural Studies, and Western American Literature.
She has contributed numerous book chapters to anthologies, for example The Absent Mother in the Cultural Imagination (Palgrave, 2017); Toy Stories: The Toy as Hero in Literature, Comics, and Film (McFarland, 2017); and Folk Belief and Traditions of the Supernatural (Beewolf, 2016). She also co-writes research articles with students, for example “Deconstructing Landscape, Weather, and Othering in Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights” with Kassidy Wilson (International Journal of Literary Humanities, 2022); “Crafty Kids: ‘Hansel and Gretel’ and the Survival of the Cleverest” with Mary Oliver (Modern Journal of Studies in English Language Teaching and Literature, 2020); and "Intertextual Perspectives on Contemporary Retellings of 'Cinderella' and 'Beauty and the Beast'" with Kylee Sullivan (Humanities and Social Sciences Review, 2017).

Crisis communication: The intersections of language, culture, and identity
Associate Professor Dr. Rofiza Aboo Bakar is attached to the Universiti Teknologi MARA, Penang, Malaysia and has been with the university for more than two decades. For the entire tenure, she has had the experience of being a lecturer, writer, researcher, trainer, consultant and administrator.
Respected for her accountability and dependability, she has been elected to spearhead her department twice. She is currently the Head of Study Centre, Academy of Language Studies.
She holds a PhD degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Science, Malaysia. In 2015, she was also conferred by the university the Tun Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Haji Hamdan Sheikh Tahir Medal for being the best PhD student in the School of Educational Studies. She holds a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology from the University of Science, Malaysia in 2001, and the Bachelor’s degree in Teaching of English as a Second Language from the University of Malaya in 1996.
Dr. Rofiza Aboo Bakar loves giving talks and has presented a number of conference papers both locally and internationally. She has also been invited as keynote and plenary speakers in conferences by universities locally and abroad, and by corporate organisations.
She specializes in English Language Teaching and Learning, Reading Responses, Digital Storytelling and Creativity. Although her essential task is in teaching English Language at the university, her interests vary. She obtained the Bronze Medallion and Bronze Cross medals and certificates from the Life Saving Society Malaysia and Malaysian Swimming Teachers’ Association, and is a certified swimming instructor. Of late, her research has dealt with understanding effective teaching swimming skills to children with autism. Her experience in learning educational psychology and cognition for her degrees has helped her to apply the knowledge in teaching both the English language and swimming.
Su-Hie Ting graduated with a PhD in Applied Linguistics from the University of Queensland, Australia. Her research interests include language choice and identity, academic writing, communication strategies, and health communication.
As an avid researcher, Su-Hie Ting is actively involved in numerous research projects. As of mid-2022, she has written 400 papers, achieved 1,779 citations, and reviewed 250 papers and books. Her current h-index is 23. She is highly sought out by both students and colleagues for her expertise in writing, editing, and research methodology. She has been invited by the Malaysia Ministry of Higher Education to be on the national panel for the English Language Higher Education Assessment in Malaysia.
Su-Hie Ting is also the founder and currently the Chief Editor for Issues in Language Studies, a SCOPUS-listed journal under the Faculty of Language and Communication, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak.
Dr. Endro Dwi Hatmanto is a lecturer of the English Education Department at the Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in English/Language Arts Teacher Education from the Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. He then went on to finish an MA in Information Science/Studies from the University of South Australia and a PhD in International/Global Studies from RMIT University.
As a researcher, Dr. Hatmanto’s research projects have been published in several journals such as the International Journal of Language Education and Applied Linguistics and the English Language Teaching Educational Journal. His latest works were on the Strategies in Teaching and Engaging the Millennial Generation and Challenges in Implementing E-Learning in the Language Education Context: Case Study at an English Education Department in Indonesia.
Dr. Melicent Jalova Alpern is a paraprofessional at Andrew Hill High School, San Jose, California who is involved in the socio-economic development of high school students in the emotionally disturbed department of AHHS.
Dr. Alpern, who finished her PhD in Communication in 2021 from the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), has over 20 years of teaching. Prior to her transfer to the US, she was an Associate Professor at the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology handling courses under the Department of English.
She had also conducted trainings and empowering professionals, both in direct and virtual English presentations at university and secondary levels. Among these are several courses she had conducted to businesspersons and engineers of the Iligan Bay Chamber of Commerce.
She has published and presented topics in Communication and Applied Linguistics at university conferences in the Italy, Turkey, Brunei, Libya, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, and USA. Dr. Alpern’s research interests include Intercultural and Intergroup Communication, Language and Culture, and Applied Linguistics.

Language Learning
Dr Souba Rethinasamy is an Associate Professor at the Faculty of Language and Communication, Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS). She obtained her Ph.D. in Language Testing and Evaluation from the University of Roehampton, London. She has more than twenty years of experience in teaching English language and related courses at university level. Besides teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students, Dr Souba is also involved in training junior academics. Her research interests include language assessment, English medium instruction, ICT in language education, and student mobility.

Pandemic Approach to Teaching
Dr. Francisco Perlas Dumanig is an Assistant Professor of English and TESOL coordinator at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. He was a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, University of Malaya, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and other universities in the Philippines, Malaysia, Middle East, and the USA. He has done research on Language and Identity of Economic Migrants, English Language Teaching and Learning (ENL, ESL, and EFL), Language Planning and Language Policy, and Southeast Asian Englishes. His current research focuses on Family Language Policy of Filipinos in Hawaii, Education and Language in the Philippines, and Caregiver’s Interaction with Elderly Patients in Adult Residential Care Homes. He has published some of his works in peer-reviewed journals, such as Cambridge Language Teaching Journal, Journal of Multilingual and Multicultural Development, World Englishes, Multilingua, Language Policy, and International Journal of Bilingual Education and Bilingualism.

Dr. Norhaslinda Hassan is a senior lecturer at the Academy of Language Studies, University Teknologi MARA, Cawangan Pulau Pinang. She holds a Ph.D. degree in Language Testing from International Islamic University Malaysia. Her research interests include washback, test impact, formative and summative assessment, learning-oriented assessment, and language assessment.

Hazel Jovita is a faculty at the Department of Political Science, of the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, Iligan City, Philippines, editor of Langkit: Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities and co- editor of Digital Politics and Democracy of the Frontiers in Political Science. She is a member of the Philippine Political Science Association and Philippine Society of Public Administration. Her publications are in the areas of governance, disaster management and public policy. Her current projects are on electoral branding and policy implementation studies.
SEPTRIN JOHN CALAMBA, MA

Septrin Calamba is an associate professor at the Department of Sociology, MSU-IIT. His research interests include young people, disaster, conflict, and everyday politics. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Sociology at the Alfred Deakin Institute for Citizenship and Globalisation, Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia. He is a recipient of the Deakin University Postgraduate Research Scholarship. His PhD research project investigates the young people’s everyday peace practices in Mindanao.
