The Western Region has several large towns, each of which is the hub for their area. Bethel, located at the Kuskokwim River's lower reaches, is the region's largest town (#8 in the state). Other important communities are Kodiak (#9), Unalaska/Dutch Harbor (#12), Nome (#16), Kotzebue (#17), and Dillingham (20th).
With no roads connecting the Western Region with the rest of Alaska and ferry service only to Kodiak and Unalaska, the region's communities are relatively isolated and primarily accessed by plane.
