The Western Region is the portion of Alaska along the Bering Sea coast. The Alaska Range separates it from the Southcentral Region and the Brooks Range from the Arctic Region.
There is no clear border between the Interior and Western Regions. Think of it as based on a dividing line where people are either more orientated towards the Interior or the coast. This is reflected in both the ecosystems and human histories. The Interior Region is forested and was traditionally the Athabaskan Alaskan Natives' homeland. The Western Region is tundra and the homeland of Yupik Alaskan Natives.
