Policies & Procedures

Students are encouraged to use the digital resources such as the Destiny catalog and Library Book Request form to request physical copies of books. Also, students have access to the Sora App, used for checking out ebooks and audio books. This app can be tied to Chapin Library and its collection of books, ebooks, and audiobooks. Due to Covid and Hybrid model, students will not be visiting the library learning commons.

Listed here is an updated library book procedures: Library Book Procedures

*Book returns will include a book cart on each of the 5th grade (orange) and 6th grade (green) sides. The bookdrop will be in the flow of metal detector traffic for the students who have classes upstairs.

**Due to COVID-19 restrictions, policies and procedures below are not currently in use. See above for most recent changes.**

Library Hours and Availability

  • To serve our students and staff, our facility is open daily from 7:00 am to 2:30 pm.

  • Each classroom teacher will have two passes. Only two students at a time may visit from each class.

  • Teachers are allowed to bring their entire class or send groups of students for book check-out or return as long as it's worked out in advance with the media specialist.

  • Parts of the learning commons may be temporarily closed for MAP testing, SC testing, special academic events, and/or workshops/classes.

Circulation Policy

Students may check out two books for up to two weeks. Most books may be renewed once. In some exceptions, when it’s needed for a project, it can be renewed a second time. Under the Librarian’s discretion, some books may not be renewed due to student demand.

Library Fines, Overdue Policy, and Communication

  • Students are responsible for the reasonable care and prompt return of books they borrow. A printed receipt listing the day your book is due will be given when you check out a book. Keeping this receipt in your book will help to remind you of the due date. This date is usually two weeks from the date on which the book is checked out. The student is responsible for returning the book to the learning commons on or before the date indicated on the due date slip.

  • In the event the learning commons is closed, students should put their book on the book return cart or in the bookdrop located in the cafeteria. This cart and bookdrop will be checked at the end of every day and periodically throughout the day. If a student is absent on the day the book is due, they should return or renew the book the day they return to school.

  • SJI Library imposes no overdue fines for late books. However, students cannot check out any additional items until all overdue items are returned or renewed. Students must bring any library book with them to renew.

  • Again, students are responsible for books and materials they have borrowed. They need to pay the cost of the missing or damaged item. Students pay five dollars if a damaged book can be repaired. Students pay the cost of the book when the damaged book is beyond repairable and must be replaced with a new copy. Books that are more than 60 days late will be marked lost automatically by the system. When a book is marked lost, a fine equal to the replacement cost of the book is placed on the student’s account. Assuming the book is found and returned to the library, the fine is removed from the student’s account with no further repercussions. The only charges students may incur are those for lost or damaged books.

  • Emails will be sent to students and to the parents of students with overdue and/or lost books every Wednesday. Then, at the time interims and report cards are sent home, emails will be sent to those students and to the parents of students with lost books.
