Attention AMS Parents/Guardians:

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is one of the screening tools used to identify students for Gifted and Talented identification. If you are a parent or guardian of a student at Aynor Middle School and would like your student tested please complete the following google form - Parent Referral or email Dr. Smith at ssmith006@horrycountyschools.net.

If your student is already identified as Gifted and Talented there is no need for the student to test.

The deadline to refer your student for testing is September 10,2026.

CogAT Testing

The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a group-administered aptitude test for grades K-12 used to estimate students’ reasoning and problem solving skills. Unlike assessment tests which measure what a student has already learned, aptitude tests are designed to measure intellectual ability, focusing on analytic and problem solving skills rather than specific knowledge.

The CogAT test is made up of three sections called batteries (verbal, nonverbal, and quantitative). Each battery is made up of 3 sub-tests groups, which contain specific format for that sub-test. Each sub-test group contains 10-25 questions depending on grade level and which form of the test your child will be taking. The CogAT form 7 and the CogAT form 8 are identical in the number of questions per sub-test. With administration time, the CogAT form 7 and 8 take between 2-3 hours to complete.
