Inspiration

Interconnection

The following four artists represent the idea of interconnection for me. These artists are exploring the relationship between technology and art just as I am, and I pull inspiration from their interpretations of how this connection works. All of them utilize some form of coding or digital software as an integral part of their process and final composition. Apart from this usage of the digital world, I also appreciate the formal qualities of each of their work such as color, shape, form, and repetition.

Abstraction

The following four artists provide inspiration for me as an abstract artist. Not only do each of them explore the idea of abstraction in their work, they particularly investigate the idea of geometrical abstraction. As someone who is interested in mathematics and more rigid shapes, I am intrigued by each of their different approaches to this concept. I also enjoy how each artist pulls out a different type of materiality of the medium in the work. For example, Grace Degennaro seems to be playing with opacity and transparency, whereas Jylian Gustlin adds much more physicality and emotion to the surface.

Digital Landscape

The following two artists relate to the idea of the Digital Landscape, defined by Art 21. The digital landscape to me means exploring different digital mediums and software while also translating them into the physical world, extending the technological landscape into reality. Both Avery Singer and Rachel Rossin begin their artistic processes digitally and then work to adapt the imagery to a more physical medium. This idea is one that has been very prominent for me so far in my artistic journey, and I see it as a continuing theme so I enjoy getting to know each of their bodies of work. Furthermore, both of them play with an idea of abstraction which fits into my aesthetic and style.

Exploration

Although Rafaël Rozendaal may not explictly represent the idea of exploration, I see his work as an area I personally can explore more. For my Three Works project, I incorporated a video piece as part of my series and saw some potential for it to develop into a medium I could work with. Rozendaal has lots of interesting approaches to video that include many themes I have been exploring, such as technology, color, and shape. Therefore, I find inspiration from this artist because it shows a different path I could further investigate.

Process

The following two artists reflect the idea of process for me. In my work I really value the journey it takes to get to the end product and in some ways want it to be reflected in the end piece. With Robert Smithson, I felt he related to this idea as his pieces are these fascinating, geometrical land works. However, another aspect of his work is the documentation and preparation. There needs to be prep work before and after the completion of the piece, so process seems to become an integral component to his artistic practice. Additionally, he works with a wide range of mediums which is of interest to me. With Bernard Cohen and Carrie Moyer, I see their works as relating to process because some of them are very intricate and you can see the mark making and effort it took to finish the pieces. They both seem to be using very particular techniques to achieve their final output which is intriguing for me to see.
