The students may not have such a space at home, but they could create a CALM AREA with their parent’s consent. The entire family would need to agree on how the calm area would be used: location of the calm area, accessible for all family members (include parents), agreed upon time limit, respect for the tools, etc.. The space would need to be void of distractions, comfortable (pillow on the floor or comfy chair) and have mindfulness tools (paper and pencils/crayons for drawing, a squishy ball, a stuffed animal, relaxing music, etc.). This would be a wonderful family activity that reinforces the students’ SEL skills as well as promoting family bonding.
