A major focus for 7th grade language arts is to build students' reading stamina and utilize their IR books as mentor texts throughout each unit. This will be accomplished in the following ways:
goal setting for books and genres read
weekly formatives to see how the skills learned in language arts transfer to their books
In order to accomplish this goal, we ask that students come prepared with a book every day and read for 30 minutes every night!
Independent Reading is a great opportunity to strengthen student reading skills! Below, you will see a sample, completed Independent Reading Bookmark, skills practice, goal-setting sheet, and book log. Students will set reading goals for the whole semester and check their progress on their goals frequently. Students will have formative assessments to see how the skills learned in language arts transfer to their Independent Reading.

This year, we will be enjoying Sal and Gabi Break the Universe by Carlos Hernandez in our language arts classes. We will have guest readers as we journey through the book during our Independent Reading time! Click on the picture to learn more about this fantastic book!
Language Arts classes will visit the Media Center every few weeks for book checkout. They will also have the option of putting books on hold through Destiny Quest.
